Unless you are "chasing the dragon" and trying to get to the highest of highs and snag one of the so-called "superstar" free agents that are meant to push you into contention. Of course there are always guys in the secondary market after the initial scrum for the top-tier guys.

Since Portland probably needs one of those top-tier guys to move from "cute upstart" to "serious contender" status, I don't think we're going to get a guy for cheap (if we get anybody in that top-tier at all).

I agree this is the year we swing for the fences. We have the cap space to to it and there are free agents available that would solve our most glaring weaknesses .

I just don't think giving a role player like Bismack Biyombo a max, or near max, contract is swinging for the fences. More like swinging and missing. Biyombo is not the kind of player that would bump us up to serious contender status. Again, a nice role player and I'd love to have him, but I don't see any way to get him AND get also get the kind of top-tier big man we need to make the jump to the next level.

Biyombo is the Harrison Barnes of Centers.
Let other teams offer these clowns huge contracts.

Another way to think of it in terms of "Desperation Level."
    Before Draft: DL 1
    Now: DL 3
    July 1: DL 5
July 30: (if we haven't used our $$$) DL 9

Biyombo at $15 mil is probably DL 7 or 8.

Honestly, I think I'd rather take Rubio/Whatshisface for cap space than sign Biyombo to a max contract.

Agreed with this. Although Pek could be hurt for 50 games a year. Still it is close. And that is sad!

Sadly it sounds like he is plan A. Hope I'm wrong.

When did I say going after Biyombo would be swinging for the fences? I'm only saying he's exactly the kind of player that is going to get superstar money in a market like this because he's (overall) above average player (when you factor in defense). I suspect a lot of GMs saw how important Tristan Thompson was to the Cavs winning it all this year and they're going to talk themselves into Bismack being a guy in a similar mold.

Personally, I think the Blazers need a guy of Durant's caliber to have any hope of being realistic title contenders for the next few years - a real superstar, not some cheap simulacrum.

If we sign Biyombo we should resign Meyers.

Pek may never play again and he's owed more than $20 mil for his two seasons remaining. Rubio isn't anywhere that good for a team to absorb and stretch a contract that bad.

Biyombo seem like a likely target of the Knicks.

Pek is definitely injury prone but I have seen nothing that says he won't play ever again. Got a link on that? Rubio has trade value even if you don't keep him. This just shows how bad I don't want to pay Biyombo more than anything about the players in the deal. I not saying I would be thrilled with the trade but I would accept it more than spending most (or even all by some reports) of our dough on a guy who is going to break the bank after one good (half) season like Jerome James.

On the radio last night during the draft they were talking to a GM of a team, don't remember what team, but he said that paying biz the max is a good way to get yourself fired.

I don't think anyone will be stupid enough to pay him max (22.34 MIL or so) but I bet someone easily pays him 85% of his max. 19.0 MIL in that case a year for him? No thanks!

Make offers for Cauley Stein or John Henson instead of paying this clown IMO.

I would love either of those guys. Our cupboard is pretty bare for trading though. And Henson is definitely staying put if MIL can move Monroe (Henson in my eyes is the better player even, if he would just get the minutes).

I understand, but they just added Maker and Jabari is playing the 4. We should be gauging the interest on similar players IMO.

Another trade I would GLADLY take over signing Biyombo (or Barnes).
