Why do we need to sign Leonard?

Dallas can extend him. His $7M cap hold going off our books is what matters.

You're not trading the cap hold, you're removing the cap hold by trading the player.

We need ~$24M in cap space to make room for Howard.

The cap holds or salaries of the three players add up to $21M. Almost enough to cover Howard's salary with cap space.

The players are gone, the $21M is achieved, we already have $24M to sign one of the players. This would get us to $45M in cap space.

You have to SIGN the player to TRADE the player. You can't trade a free agent.

    OK.

But I'm not seeing where you can't trade players in combination with others in S&T situations.

Feel free to correct me on that.

If some team is willing to do S&T for the players individually in exchange for picks, fine.

Otherwise we can clear the cap space by renouncing the two RFAs and a trade (Aminu for a pick) to gain the remaining cap space needed.

Yes and no; I'm amending my previous statements on this. It appears that you can combine the player in an S&T if the entire signing is done using cap space; another wrinkle of which I was unaware. So yes, you are correct: if we are under the cap, and we re-sign Leonard to a (say) $13M deal that keeps us under the cap, we would, in fact, be able to include another player in that S&T.

Well done, sir. I retract my previous objections to your S/T Leonard + Aminu for Howard suggestions.

this thread can probably be closed now. Sly? lol

Sucks that it has come to this, but it was expected even if we chose to be optimistic about free agency for once.

Disagree. Howard is still a (1%) possibility.

You have to think Millsap may want to go, I don't see him as a 3 and I don't think he'd like being the 6th man.
