It's never going to be consistent or completely fair. It's not from lack of trying or not wanting things to be fair. I've said many times I don't read every post. Even the posts I do read a times I'm just skimming. Because of that things are going to get missed. It's not intentional. I can not stress this enough, this is a community, if you see something please bring it to someone's attention.

Please add all of those words to the 'offended' list...

I do want mods to be consistent. But id also like to see social justice people be consistent.

When you see posters state "those guys" trying to distance yourself, even though you made multiple posts after reading someone saying something makes one look "r word" or get up in arms over an issue they feel like hits home, why arent they making a stink about something commonly known as offensive to people that cant stand up for themselves?

It really irks me. When i sit in a womans studies class, where they feel its ok to abort children 6 months into pregnancy because raising a child with developmental deficiencies would be too hard for them, but they complain when someone walks into a room and says "hey guys" because its sexist.

I was writing out a big explanation of my views on it but I realized I don't really even care when my posts are edited because they offend someone. I'll just say that I mean no ill-will towards mentally challenged people when I use a word like "retarded" and I mean no ill-will towards women when I use a word like "pussy". I don't enjoy offending people but what matters most to me is what I know my intentions are.

I honestly don't intend to offend you but if you think words have no power you are dangerously naïve.

It just seems like a fruitless endeavor.

The medical term was "mentally retarded" because their cognitive growth was slowed (or retarded) so people started using "retard" or "retarded" as an insult.

So they changed it. It became mentally handicapped.... but now that's considered offensive because they don't want to be referred to as handicapped.

So now it's mentally challenged or special needs, but even those can be used as insults.

Now that site I linked wants to use "differently-abled.” What the fuck does that even mean? Differently-abled?

We keep trying to protect people from words and thoughts and ideas, but the world is a cold and unforgiving place. No matter how many times they change the name for people with that type of condition, it's not going to change the fact that they have it. You can soften the terminology all you want.

You should use the term "differently advantaged".

Sure, words can have power, but when you or I get offended by a word, we are giving that word and the person using it power.

Why am I not offended when someone calls me a white boy? Or cracker? Or honkey? Why do those words not insult me? Why do they not hurt my feelings? Is it because we don't consider being white an insult? But if someone says you're being a vagina, it means they think being a woman means you're weaker? Right? So the word bothers you because you see it as demeaning towards women. But why do we consider being called white not an insult, but being called a woman IS an insult? The person using the term is still attempting to be insulting, right? So the intent is there, either way, but it's up to US to decide whether we personally find the term hurtful.

I'm sure, however, that you understand that the underlying assumption of using words like "pussy", "gay", or "retarded" in a pejorative sense is that the primary group associated with those words (females, homosexuals, or the mentally challenged) are inherently inferior, which is what makes being equated to or included in those groups undesirable.

I have no doubt that you are intelligent and articulate enough to find ways to effectively communicate your viewpoint without simultaneously insulting an entire subset of humanity.

Mentally challenged people are mentally inferior. That's essentially what it means. Women are physically/athletically inferior to men. These are facts. Accepting those facts does not mean I think any life has more value than another. That's why I don't necessarily see it as an insult to all women when, for example, LaMarcus would get called LaMarsha or something like that.

You've asked a lot of questions here so I'll try and answer in order but then I'm done wading in. I come here to have fun and this isn't.

I was not offended by "a word", I was pointing out something that was ironic to me. Which, by the way, means I found it somewhat humorous because people were outraged by an "ism" while committing an "ism".

Yes, it's because we don't consider being a white male an insult. White males have historically had the vast majority of the financial opportunities and prominent positions from the beginning. All other "minorities" were oppressed and exploited in some way or another for their advancement from 100 - 150 years into the "all men are created equal" USA and capitalism before they even got the right to vote or own property.

Yes, if someone says you're being a vagina it means they think being a woman means you're weaker. What do you think it means when people say it?

Being called white is not an insult. Being called a woman is not an insult... unless it's used in a way to demean the person. Taking stereotypical negative characteristics such as being too emotional, physically weaker, or even less intelligent to make someone else feel they are inferior to the person saying it is the insult.

    1. LMA is not a member of this community so he's free to insult.

    2. There is no list.

    3. It's not Marsha, it's Marcia and it's a reference to this -

(At least that's the story I'm going with.)

So saying LMA is soft (AKA weak, not a man, etc), and equating that to a female (LaMarcia/LaMarsha) isn't offensive? Yet saying pussy is?

OK, got it. Just making sure I understand the PC police/social justice warriors/safe space lovers here.

The word "boy" can be extremely offensive when used to address African American males....it's not people making the word powerful..it's the way it's used in ignorant speech...ignorant speech doesn't have to be literal. Figurative speaking has many branches but when it's condescending...it's wrong.

Listen, I've already very nicely publicly apologized to you. I did not intend to upset you. Call me what you want, I'm not liberal but if that makes you feel better to label me have it. How about a few more labels, cunt, racist, dumb fuck, whatever. All I know is that I'm man enough to say I didn't intend to upset you. That appears to be something you are unable or unwilling to do. You now want lists and rules who knows the fuck what. Why is it so fucking hard to say, I don't agree with that but being the intelligent and reasonable person that I am I can understand how it might bother someone else? Instead it's all about you, and how you have been offended or inconvenienced.

I have repeatedly said in this thread, for right or wrong, I treat this place like a community. I'm not trying to pick on anyone or be on some power trip. I'm trying to keep this place as friendly and open to all Blazer fans as possible. Sometimes I get it right, something I get terribly wrong. Considering how many posts and how upset I've made some of you it looks like I got this one wrong.

My post wasn't directed at you. I was not calling you a liberal. I was however calling the other people that were getting so up-in-arms about the words used previously.

I understand your job. I just think JFIZ is correct there needs to be some sort of censorship consistency if you're going to start this slippery slope and my previous post about LaMarsha/Marcia points that out. Eventually we'll get to a point where nobody is speaking, for fear of offending some group or another. ;)
