Usually it's when a team is trying to bust a move. Houston let Parsons go because they were chasing Bosh. GSW just let Barnes go because they were signing Durant. They also let Ezeli go. Boston is letting Sullinger go..... not sure about that move.
I would say go to Hark and give him 2 options -- play this year on QO OR take a 2yr -- player option deal at 2 yrs for 18 to 21m OR let him walk but i am starting to come around to the keep assets for future so you can make a trade.
Hmm, not sure how I feel about this... I just worry that Paul will have to wait a few years to buy another submarine.
Sullinger is who Brooklyn should now go after. BTW there's a difference between not matching an offer sheet and rescinding the QO making a player a UFA. Barnes and Sullinger both had their offers rescinded. I also don't think Wes was a RFA
I'm not a big fan of this signing. I think this contract will make Crabbe almost impossible to move. I put Mo at about the same level in terms of value. So now if a team now throws big money at Mo we are forced to match again. Then we offer CJ a max. If that happens, I think we are pretty much "stuck" with this team for Dame's prime and I just don't see this as even close to a championship team. I think we see more 2nd round exits with immovable contracts. I hope I'm wrong.
Solomon hill had his 4th year on his rookie contract declined by Indiana before the season. He was an UFA and Indiana could only offer him a 2.9 m contract.
So I guess the question is what is OUR best option for getting a championship team for Dame's prime? Draft? (Takes 3-4 years for a rookie to be effective in the playoffs) Free agency? No history in Portland in landing the super star needed Trade? In better position now than before..... What other option am I missing?
Great that we are keeping our asset (Crabbe). He was a very good, if not the best, player off our bench last season. For those, worried about his trade-ability.......he'll bring a similar salary in return....how is that Bad for us?? Yes, Neil will be stressed to figure out the financials between now and February. Meanwhile, sit back and enjoy a good bench on this team!!!
That's a lot of money for a guy who played well for 1 season, but i guess we had no choice so...whatever, good job Neil..... i guess.... lol.
Crabbe,Plumlee and Mayers seems like a 'nice' package for Vucevic or Okafor doesn't it? Oh Neil, please do that thing where you trade a few mediocre players for 1 all-star
Losing Crabbe would have really weakened the bench, so I understand why the blazers matched, but it could backfire big time if Crabbe gets injured or doesn't live up to the deal. With Plumlee and CJ's extensions coming up, we're gonna see a huge trade at some point. Maybe we'll get that consolidation trade we've all been pining for for the last decade. SPAM away!
I do think our options were / are limited. But hey, if Paul Allen is willing to spend $200M to see where this goes, I'm ok with it. However, I don't think we should get our hopes up that this is a championship contender. As for being in a better position for a trade now, I disagree with that. I think that a player could have been had for MUCH less that would / could produce most of what Crabbe will. That player would have been much easier to trade, IMO. I just don't think it is necessary to spend $18M on a bench player.
I just posted this in the stickied Blazers Salary Cap Info thread: Here are my current calcs for where the Blazers will be next year (2017-18): - Assumed CAP: $102,000,000 - Assumed Tax Level: $122,000,000 - Assumed CJ will get max contract - Assume Plumlee extension: $12,000,000 Damian Lillard, $26,070,900 CJ McCollum, $23,908,071 (max assumed) Allen Crabbe, $18,500,000 Evan Turner, $17,131,148 Mason Plumlee, $12,000,000 (assumed) Meyers Leonard, $9,904,494 Al-Farouq Aminu, $7,319,035 Festus Ezeli, $7,330,000 Ed Davis, $6,352, 531 Noah Vonleh, $3,505,233 Shabazz Napier, $2,361,360 Pat Connaughton, $1,014,746 Jake Layman, $905,249 Louis Montero, $1,014,756 Mo Harkless, ? Anderson Varejao (waived-stretched), $1,984,005 Total Salaries: $140,988,997 With the tax level at $122,000,000, the Blazers will be over the tax limit by $18,988,997. That will cause a tax penalty of: $7.5M (first $5M over) + $8.75M (second $5M over) + $12.5M (third $5M over) + $3.25 x $3,988,997 = $41.75M By matching Crabbe's offer, we've essentially guaranteed we won't be bringing Plumlee and/or Harkless back in 2017-18, or a significant cost savings trade has to happen.
For Vucevic?? That's an overpay and a half... Plumlee and Vucevic aren't even that different when you look at their advanced stats.
