It seems that the legacy of this generation will be how much we talk about shit that doesn't matter, and how little we talk about things that do. Who cares of some twit doesn't stand for the National Anthem? It's a bit impolite socially...but why is it such a huge national story?

It's funny... people want the atheletes to be role models... role models stand up for what they believe in... all of a sudden that's a bad thing!

I think it's a bit cheesy myself. First of all, it's based on a false premise. Secondly, it's like saying the whole nation deserves disrespect because of some bad thing you don't like going on. It's like...oh, I won't stand for the anthem, because I won't respect a nation where corporations pollute the rivers. It's not as though he's drawing attention to something that doesn't already have oodles of attentin.

Not saying what they are doing isn't, I am just noticing the dichotomous nature of what people think Athletes should be, to what they want them to be.

Don't care either way. Why is the anthem even played before games anyway?

I just have a request. Can we bring back "Take Me Out to the Ball Game?" So many teams gave jettensoned it in favor of Kate Smith hollering God Bless America 165+ days a year. I know they want to honor the flag but isn't that what the national anthem is for? They are erasing a part of the frigging culture.

The national anthem only gets played before finals here (pretty much for all sports), not before regular season games.

I feel like you've got it backwards. To me the NBA is much more open minded and progressive than the NFL.

Meanwhile the NFL likes to fine their players for being fined. And if you haven't been fined before, don't worry, there's a fine for that too.

True the NFL is strict on conformity when it comes to uniform. With these T-shirts I think are more direct with the message. It could be because the NFL won't allow a protesting player to wear protest T-shirt that they use the Anthem pulpit to get their message heard.

Exactly. It was the media and continues to be them who blows these things WAY out of proportion.

I can't get behind it. These dudes can do what they want, it's just petty to me. It's all talk no action. You can sit for the national anthem for a cause you believe in but at the end of the day did you put up any money towards that cause? were you on the front lines? no, you just sat during a song and now for whatever reason people think you're a hero. It's dumb. That's society today though

The NBA has a rule that every player must stand for the Anthem. So in that sense, they are more strict.

What Kaepernick did, was quietly and non violently raise more awareness and discussion about an issue that needs to be changed. I hated the sitting, but had no problem with the kneeling. I also like the kneeling more than the raised fist. I think what the Seahawks did was awesome.

Injustice won't change unless people take a stand or a kneel against it.

My favorite thing is people calling Kaepernick anti American. In truth, peaceful demonstration and protest is about the most American thing someone can do.

I am asking because I don't know. How do those pictures affect you? How does slavery affect you? I ask because as a Christian, I am not affected by the pursection of Christians that has happened.

Kneeling doesn't change a thing. Nor does it bring up discussion. It actually did the opposite. It brought people to argue and hate and not come to any sort of logical conversation. He apparently is supposed to donate a million but I would like to see proof of that. So yeah, if you actually wanna make a difference, go out and do it instead of kneel or sit on the bench. Just saying

I only read the last page of this thread. Smallpox blankets were used as a weapon of war in Roman Empire times, so it's untrue that the method is recent. Knowledge of modern biology isn't necessary to use them.

What I want from you is to stop feeling so proud in American Exceptionalism that you continue to start wars exactly like the Indian Wars, against cultures which don't threaten you, in order to ruthlessly destroy them to replace them with European economic, legal, and value systems. You seem to think it's all in the past, when it's still happening all over the world. Its name is "American foreign policy."
