I would have served regardless of that law, and kept my mouth shut. Those who go into the military to make a social statement about "equality", or to use it as a launching point for social justice, are fucking morons and the military doesn't need them. They are a distraction to the responsibility that the military has to keeping our country safe and our interests secured.

As I've said before: my sexuality is secondary to actual work and responsibility. Someone, or a law, telling me that my sexuality isn't welcome doesn't keep me from accomplishing those two things. Plenty of gay people served in the military before DADT was repealed. All the repealing did was allow them to be open about it.

For me, being open about my sexuality isn't something that I wake up every day feeling like I HAVE to do in order to live. I choose to be selective about whom I tell it to and when, but other than that, I don't let my sexuality define who I am. I'm just a regular person with faults, hopes, dreams, fears, and desires like everyone else.

I don't need to announce that I'm Bisexual in order to live my life, and I sure as fuck can keep quiet about it if it means keeping my job.

Being LGBT doesn't put food on the table or, in the case of the military: put rounds into a enemy who's trying to kill you. Put it aside or, if you can't do that, then fuck off and find something else to do with your life.

Jesus, not everything in life has to be about defining who you want to be. I know this may be a foreign concept to some, but there REALLY ARE more important things in life than what your race is, or what your sexuality is.

Growing up, I didn't have the luxury of sitting and pouting about these kinds of things. I had a mother with a violent temper who told you to do something, and you either did it or faced her wrath. And when I became an adult, I didn't have the luxury of getting to choose certain aspects of my life to define myself with. My father was constantly on my ass about keeping a job and having health insurance.

So for me, I had to prioritize certain aspects of my life. My sexuality was always secondary to everything else. That doesn't mean I'm "hiding in the dark", or any of that bullshit. It simply means that I've prioritized what works for me in my life, and I don't need anyone giving me special treatment about anything.

I'm a person, first and foremost. It's a shame others can't feel the same way about themselves.

The military said you had to, until Obama changed it, back when you say you would have joined it. So you're the one who said you wanted to hide in the dark.

The larger point is that you don't mind the government making it illegal to be gay. Until the hippy revolution, gay men in Britain were forcibly castrated. Interesting.

 

I just read about that. Sounds like a clusterfuck of epic proportions all the way around. On one hand, I agree with the military's assessment, but on the other hand, it's very hard to ignore the evidence that it was a wedding once the fire stopped.

It also raises some questions: the Brig. General on the ground reported that he was taking fire, and it sounds like these were the only structures in the area. So who the hell was firing? And where else were the rounds coming from if not from these buildings?

Bullshit. I've followed these issues for years. The only thing that kept Obama from signing gun control was a 5-4 margin in the supreme court with every single gun rights issue that went before it, as well as a Republican House. That's it.

I never agreed with the Government's stance on gay issues in the Military. I simply said that I prioritize MY sexuality a certain way as it works best for me. And I also said being gay in the military should be secondary to the bigger picture.

Jesus. I wouldn't want the guy next to me in a ditch to suddenly break out into song about why it's okay to be gay when there are rounds flying overhead. Prioritize! Focus on the mission! Not your need to feel accepted for being gay.

In the trenches, everyone's equal. They're all stuck in the same shit pile, and they all have targets on their backs. If someone whined to me on a battlefield about the military being mean to them, I'd lose my fucking shit. Do your fucking job; the job you VOLUNTARILY signed up for. Worry about your precious feelings when your back in your tent. If you make it there.

Remember the election of 2008?? I sure do. All the gun nuts went scrambling to buy all the guns and ammo they could get their hands on. All because "Obama was gonna take their guns away and restrict their access to ammo". And "he was gonna incite a race war." This led to a "shortage" of bullets. My gun nut coworkers literally scoured the valley looking for ammo. They actually had their own phone tree, so that when one guy found ammo, he could call the others. When one guy found a source, he'd stock up for some of the others and they would pay him back. It was so paranoid it was pathetic. I mean, these were generally reasonable people scared to death that "they" were going to go door to door confiscating their precious arsenals. Eight years later, despite numerous mass shootings nationwide, these same individuals have exactly the same rights they have always had. A reactionary of any stripe is still a reactionary....

The REALITY of what we ACTUALLY believed is this: that Obama was going to push for Gun Control (which he did on multiple occasions), support those who push Gun Control (which he has, continuously), and pressure Congress into drawing up Gun Control bills (which he has on numerous occasions).

We also believed that it was critical to keep the SC on a Conservative majority, and that is exactly what happened, but no thanks to Obama. And as a result, every single challenge to the second amendment and gun rights, both in States and at the Federal Level, passed by a 5-4 margin in favor of Gun Rights.

One vote. That's it. And you wonder why "gun nuts" were losing their shit over the possibility of Hillary and a Liberal Justice.

Nobody with half a brain believed that Big Brother was going to come knocking on the door to take them away. Now, that being said.... if Obama had gotten his wish of a universal registration (among other things), then the chances of that happening becomes a more probable reality. After all, confiscation happened after Katrina in N.O., and to Law Abiding people there too; not gang bangers. And if ever there was a time or a place for an innocent person to have a gun, it was in NO after Katrina.

That being said, I've continuously told my fellow gun owners, time and time again, not to give in to "Panic Buying". For the most part, people have caught on over the years. But there are still many out there, both gun buyers and gun dealers, who take advantage of the panic to price gouge.

If you don't follow these issues, then I don't expect you to understand any of this. Nor do I expect one post on a forum to explain away 8 years of Gun Rights debates and Gun Control.

But don't act like those of us who do are a bunch of paranoid nutjobs just because you don't see things the way that we do.
