Stein doesn't have standing. She doesn't stand to win the recount, and it at least appears she is a tool of the Clinton losing campaign (against the law). His petition to the court has merit.
Really, what is the point? In Florida there was only a few hundred vote difference and we saw the clusterfuck that was.
So what does Trump have to hide? If he's calling the recounts a farce, and as experts say the results won't change anything...why does he need to stop the recounts? Why not let Stein waste the money she raised and then have a laugh at her and the Democrats when the results come in the same....or maybe he has something to hide. Not really. Lawyering is what lawyers do. If you can take even a .001% chance of a bad result down to 0% by winning an appeal, that's a smart play.

I highly doubt this recount changes things at all. What it is doing though is shedding light on the fact that a lot of the voting machines can be easily manipulated and are prone to errors. I'v never been a fan of the voting machines and I like the fact people are now becoming more aware of the problems that arise from them using them.
