The people bitching are the same no matter what happens. If Neil hadn't matched on Crabbe and had let the other Free Agents walked and had signed no free agents people would still be going ape shit but it would have been how he let assets go for nothing. It's a never ending cycle of always thinking they are smarter than everyone else coupled with CDS (complete dickhead syndrome). Masters of hindsight, it's the same complex Canzano suffers from. This idea that we should always be outraged unless perfect results are accomplished. That mindset suggests that fans of let's say 28 teams should be outraged at the lack of success and the utter failure of their respective GM's. It's entertainment folks, and if you are offended you probably should volunteer at a soup kitchen or something to realize how freaking petty it is to be so outraged by a game.
I was happy to hear Neil say we're going to add 3 players this summer...he was pretty finite about it. At least 3 roster spots will change offseason which will keep it interesting.
Olshey did make a mistake though. His mistake was thinking that Free agency would be a route the Blazers could go to land top talent. The biggest downside was that cap space coincided with 4 players coming off Rookie deals and 2 more up for extensions. To be fair look around the league at teams that have an All Star leave as a free agent... it takes a while to recover, it's a scramble when you lose your biggest asset. You can say what you want about the writing having been on the wall with Lamarcus but summer 2014 dude dude he wanted to retire the greatest Blazer of all time, he sounded committed and wasn't until that pop of Wesleys Achilles that Lamarcus decided to gravy train... after it was too late to move him. So yeah Neil isn't bating 1.000, show me a GM that is... but he hasn't had a ton to work with and honestly I think he's made quite a bit more good moves than bad, in fact even his bad moves aren't really bad just kinda meh.
Agreed. But for future reference... To all future Blazer General Managers. If you have an All Star who is unwilling to sign an extension with you, just trade him. Get the best deal and move on before you lose the leverage. You will probably not be as good immediately after making the deal. Thats OK. You're going to lose that player anyway. Also, forget about free agency. By all means, be ready to pounce if something comes up, but don't EVER count on free agency in Portland. Draft and trade. That's the ticket.
Didn't Aldridge say the team made him say he wanted to retire the best Blazer of all time? If true, then yes, it is Neil's fault that he didnt move him before his UFA.
I will meet you wherever you are to give you a mic just so I can see you drop it. This was beautiful.
I think the biggest thing people are not considering is that this year for the blazers is pretty much unique in the history of the NBA. I have never seen a blazer team have SO many players play significantly worse from the previous year: Aminu Harkless Davis Biebs ... There is no way Neil could have seen this coming. It's like the housing crisis of 2008, blazers-style.
Not hard to see Biebs playing like this for many of us and Hark is having his best season as a pro, it appears Aminu's 3pt shooting last year was an exception as he is back closer to his statistical norm as a pro, and Davis is having a down yr but its not like he is a key player for this team.
hey, I know it is not all Olsheys fault, IMO this team over achieved last yr and is now perhaps under achieving depending upon ones view, bottom line for me is that for the payroll we have our overall talent is not very good (whose fault is that?) to even come close to contending and the roster is badly imbalanced with too many guards/wings and too little from the front court. Nurk is hopefully the first step in addressing the very poor overall front court we have.
I'd like to know more about this "ascending probability of failure ". What branch of science does that come out of?
Clearly, Olshey has a big problem that he has been unable to solve in multiple opportunities. The more the authority worshippers adulate him in this thread, the more I need to balance this ridiculous lying thread with reminders of reality. If you guys would drop the bullshit, I'd stop posting to this thread, which was created only to provoke and piss off. Every day I click on S2 and this asinine thread title slaps me in my face. I click on it and see that yet another page of childish worship has been added. So I add a post to balance all you lambs in the valley tinkling your bells for your Holy Shephard.
Really? Interesting I don't see much worshipping at all. I see some people who try to keep a positive outlook and really just enjoy watching the games. If you call that worshipping okay I guess. To me I see those people as more balanced and not intent on being angry about everything. Flip side some will make everything out like it's a disaster... I say that with certainty because they are never happy with anything that happens, kind of the forum equivalent of that dad that says "what you only got a B, unacceptable". The same people come across as angry aggressive and in a way are intending to create drama. The mindset is so freaking condescending, this idea that some people feel like everyone should be outraged and it's that persons job to instill that anger, just plain arrogant. The commentary that if you aren't outraged you aren't a real fan is no different than others saying if you aren't orgasmic about the team you aren't a real fan. Both ideals are just fucking stupid to force on others. I'm not going to change the team by being angry or being elated... I don't have that power nor does anyone in these forums, so what's the point in being a tool about it?
cut and pasted from Sly's house of random thread...thought it was fitting A father buys a lie detector robot that slaps people when they lie. He decides to test it out at dinner one night. The father asks his son what he did that afternoon. The son says, "I did some schoolwork." The robot slaps the son. The son says, "Ok, Ok. I was at a friend's house watching movies." Dad asks, "What movie did you watch?" Son says, "Toy Story." The robot slaps the son. Son says, "Ok, Ok, we were watching porn." Dad says, "What? At your age I didn't even know what porn was." The robot slaps the father. Mom laughs and says, "Well, he certainly is your son." The robot slaps the mother. Robot for sale.
I think there is a place/room for criticizing as well as praising or giving credit. To me a forum like this is a place for making comments on all those things as well as supporting my team. I try to do that in a "non hating" way if I don't like the job someone has done as a player or GM or announcer. On balance I think Olshey was doing a solid enough job going into last offseason, but I strongly disagreed at the time with the money he spent on the players he acquired or kept and that has so far IMO proven to be correct criticism/disagreement as 3 of the 4 players are not IMO close to earning their big contracts and it has hamstrung us in future FA and even trading. I gave him credit for a nice job on the Nurk trade. I am not strongly advocating his removal though I wouldn't care if he was fired as I think overall he's done an average job at best - IF there was a clearly better choice then I'd be for taking it. We are all fans and and want to voice our opinions and at times vent our frustrations - that is why many of us come and it the way it is, if one is unhappy with that then they can simply not come here.
(all likes for this joke should be sent to Sly's house of random shit 2017...I take no credit for it)
