There are Mexican only soccer leagues in Portland. There are Somali only soccer leagues in Portland. Is that bullshit? Who cares the reasons different communities come together and play sports.
My step brother is gay. Growing up in Indiana, there were not alot of people accepting. He and just about every other gay person had to stay in the closet or pay the price. It would have been great if there was a group like this for him to network. There are plenty of religious and ethnic sports leagues out there. I see no problem with there being one for a persecuted minority like this.
My father used to belong to a rec league with old Timbers players in the 80s. There wasn't much passing, just guys beating the shit out of one another. I'd hope modern amateur leagues are more enlightened.
Feeling a little left out? No need. From their web site: "Welcome To NYC Gay Basketball League! We are New York's first official gay basketball league. Since our founding in 2006, we've maintained and grown an athletic environment free of discrimination for members and friends of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. " It would appear they welcome almost anyone, with the possible exception of judgmental ass hats. BNM
I grew up playing streetball on the local court. No blood no foul. You had to learn to take some hits. I broke bones, got a few teeth knocked out...and kept playing. That's real ball right there.
I used to do the full streetball circuit in Portland, go play at Mt Tabor in the crater, get my game up. Then go to Laurelhurst park, play there. Then go to Irving Park and go to war. Good times.
Rumors have it that Tim Duncan is gay. Charles Barkley even said there is probably at least one gay NBA player on each team.
I got to agree with HCP on this one. At least as far as general rec leagues go. If it's sign up or pick'em, then there shouldn't be some preconceived condition of membership. I can see in otherwise in cwrtain cases, but most should have an open door policy.
Like I said, some cases no problem. But say it's just a "whomever shows up" Indoor Soccer league. I had a friend who just gave up going because he wasn't picked. I know not every one is like that but most should have an open door policy.
