I thought @HAAK72 hit it on the head with Telfair, then @MickZagger comes outta nowhere with Darius Miles. Winner winner chicken dinner, but the Telfair selection is damn close.....and if anything, Pryzbilla was underrated.......

Yeah, for as much as I dislike Roy, he definitely wasn't overrated - and certainly not THE MOST overrated. He was a whiny, two-faced, me-first asshole who was unwilling to expand his game for the betterment of the team, but he wasn't overrated.

He's been the benchmark by which we measure our C talent. Community opinion has been, until recently, that we need another Joel. That, IMO, is overrating him. He was a fine defensive C on a shitty team, but should by no means be a benchmark or model of what we want at C.

I feel like most people hated Miles? I'd actually consider him underrated based on the amount of hate he got vs his raw talent. He never fulfilled his potential, but he had a lot of ability.

I've always been under the assumption that the phrase you use is intended to mean that we need a center that can rebound well and impact the game defensively. Not to say that we want those things exclusively, but that they are the bare minimum. Can you help me understand how that is overrating him?

That's not how I've taken it. To me, whenever people talk about needing a Joel, that's precisely what they mean - all we need is defense and rebounding from the position and nothing else matters. It would be nice to have somehow who could do more, but not necessary. Which brings to mind Robin Lopez - another overrated player.

Don't get me wrong, I liked both Joel and Robin and they both brought something to the team that we needed. But neither of them is the sort of player we should be trying to duplicate. I wouldn't say either of them are THE MOST overrated, but they both belong in the overrated discussion.

    Rasheed Wallace.

The epitome of everything that was wrong with that team - talented sure, but egotistical, selfish, not living up to potential, under-performing, and rude. CTC. What bullshit.

I'm going to throw Rolo into the ring here....he started hot just like Camby did and then mailed it in....got lots of attention for his cartoon nerd obsession and mascot pranks but he sucked the second half of his last season here...overrated!

Rest his soul, but Kevin Duckworth is my answer. Great guy off the court but on the court he was tissue-paper soft and his woes were a big reason for our choking against the Lakers.

Theo Ratliff had that disease too. I hope Nurk doesn't have it lurking in his immune system.

False. The benchmark has been Sabonis in a lot of ways. I'd say that Przybilla is the lowest acceptable bar for a center. We look at Meyers and we ask, "why can't he at least be as good as Joel?"

I was actually thinking about him when reading the underrated thread (16 & 8 for a title contender!), but looked closer at his advanced numbers before I posted and was shocked at how bad they were. He's too important a part of my childhood for me to be willing to call him overrated, but I understand why some might.

I don't think Damon was overrated.... at least not in his final few years.

I remember when we traded for him, I was pumped. Although when the media came to my school to interview people after the trade, I think I was the only person who was pissed that we traded Alvin Williams. I was a huge Damon fan though, and I remember defending his bad play for years...... but what finally broke me and I think was the final straw for a lot of people, was him bitching about playing time right before we started our series against the Spurs. That was it. You simply don't do that. You don't complain about playing time before you start the WCF. Fuck him. He was a diva and he never lived up to the hype.

Using the best player to ever play the game as the benchmark by which others are measured is a sure way to set yourself up for failure.

And yet, we do it. We constantly compare our centers to guys like Sabonis and Walton, or at the other end of the spectrum we compare them to Bowie or now Oden.

Compare, yes. But nobody is saying "we NEED a Sabas". We'd all LIKE a Sabas. But for years, people have thought that Joel is what we need. He's the benchmark - if you aren't as good you suck; if you're better you're great. Sabas/Walton are the high-water mark - not something you can realistically achieve.
