WASHINGTON — Democratic lawmakers slammed President Trump on Wednesday as news spread that he plans to pull out of the Paris climate accord, but there's not much they can do to about it if he does.

Trump announced on Twitter that he will make a decision on Thursday, and news reports Wednesday indicated he is moving toward withdrawal.

A Republican-controlled Congress couldn't stop President Barack Obama in 2015 from signing on to the treaty designed to cut lower the risks of climate change by cutting emissions, and the Democrats can't stop Trump from pulling America out of the landmark deal signed by more than 190 countries.

The deal is considered an executive agreement, and therefore not a traditional treaty requiring ratification by two-thirds of the Senate, because it doesn't bind the country to certain outcomes such as specific reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. It was a point highlighted by environmental activists two years ago when explaining why Obama could sign on to the accord without congressional consent.

    ...

Nearly two dozen Republican senators, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, wrote a letter last month to the president urging him to pull out of the deal because it threatens the Trump agenda to roll back regulations and boost the economy.

Republican Congressman Says God Will 'Take Care Of' Climate Change

Michigan Rep. Tim Walberg said during a town hall in Coldwater, Mich., on Friday that while he believes climate change is real, it is not something for humans to solve.

"I believe there's climate change. I believe there's been climate change since the beginning of time," Walberg said. "Do I think man has some impact? Yeah, of course. Can man change the entire universe? No."

He continued: "Why do I believe that? Well, as a Christian, I believe that there is a creator in God who is much bigger than us. And I'm confident that, if there's a real problem, he can take care of it."

There's no evidence this accord accomplishes anything other than the transfer of money from the US to other countries, and a hit to our GDP.

It's one more step toward erasing what damage Obama did.

Funny thing about nature...it tends to not recognize international borders.....you seriously state there's NO EVIDENCE that our contributions to the planets health accomplish anything and hurt the GDP? So an arms race will really boost the GDP and be pretty bad for the environment....you must be thrilled

I state that the goals of this accord and the models disagree. The models, the UN, etc., all say this agreement will accomplish nothing. It will not accomplish any stated goal.

Coal will save China and India and Pakistan. Hundreds of new coal plants being built there. Not here.

Getting out of this bad deal doesn't mean we're going to open the floodgates. It's likely we will still meet the emissions targets in the agreement regardless of the agreement in place or not.

coal will cause acid rain all throughout those countries...it's why they walk around with umbrellas and 5 year old kids have grey hair over there.

GOP Congressman Tim Walberg says God will solve any global climate problems we have....good to know we elect officials that rule by prayer and wait for God to fix things around here. That's your fire and brimstone....personally, I'd start by not turning the air black with coal
