Yeah, you might be jumping the gun on indicting Holdahl here, dviss. He doesn't disagree with the other person's hope that it would happen, just says he doesn't expect it to. It's impossible to know for sure what Holdahl thinks/believes on this issue, though, just from those tweets.

Its horrible and I don't think we do enough for our homeless but at the same time I don't have a good idea on how to deal with the situation.
It's a systemic problem. Seattle has it just as bad as we do if not worse. And we are just the large cities. So the problem is actually visible. The heartland and the rural communities are getting the living shit kicked out of them. Where there were agricultural industries and families that lived around BLM land.... there are just people living below the poverty line around former store fronts that Wal-Mart just nuked. Nobody has any answers I think because poverty is such an unanswerable question.
Studies in Canada and Denmark show it's actually cheaper to provide housingvfor the homeless than deal with them in the street.
The homeless isn't an all encompassing problem. There are several factors that come into play now that didn't use to. Laziness, making a political stand, anarchists, etc When I lived in New York. Homelessness was primarily made up of handicapped and mentally ill people. This is not the case in portland. Many many homeless here are simply teen runaways with zero work ethic. It's hard to want to help those that aren't willing to work hard to help themselves. I used to help those in need by giving handouts. No more. I'd rather donate to a local homeless shelter than give handouts to teens that could work but choose not to. With that said I've never lived in a city that has as bad a homeless problem as Portland. Again. I drive by johnsons creek everyday. Many homeless camps full of people who could be working for a living but prefer to hang out and ask for hand outs. It's frustrating because these losers make it very difficult for the truly helpless to get help because of so many imposters.
There are approximately 400 million people in the United States, Force our president to give each person a million dollars. End welfare. If you blow your million dollars and end up on he street, it's on you.
That would cost a cool $400 trillion. The US' total assets (minus the debt) are worth about $124 trillion ($280 trillion if you ignore the debt). The US' GDP is about $18 trillion. The US can afford to do a lot, but not that. Personally, I think a universal basic income is a pretty good idea that's getting some solid results in (admittedly limited) experiments. That's far less than 1% of the money needed to do what you suggested (it's about 0.02% of the money needed). Trump's net worth is believed to be around $3.5 billion. A small fraction of Bill Gates.

I would be in favor of a large increase in the EIC program; this rewards the working poor and has no bad side effects like increasing the minimum wage does. Warren Buffet also supports this idea.
