City planners are considering a subway tunnel connecting downtown with the area across the Willamette River

Portland, Oregon’s beloved MAX light rail has a couple of issues when it hits the city’s downtown core: short city blocks (great for walking) limit the length of the trains and necessitate frequent stops. All this while the city’s population continues its upward trajectory and more and more riders are hoping to hop on. One solution? Build a subway.

At a recent meeting of the Portland Planning and Sustainability Commission, city planners outlined a conceptual proposal for a subway tunnel linking central downtown with the area near the Oregon Convention Center across the Willamette River. Barely a squiggle on the map of proposed projects, the tunnel idea is far from a concrete plan, however, and would likely take three or four more decades before becoming reality.

On a shorter timeline are other projects aimed at increasing the efficacy of existing infrastructure, including extending MAX lines to other cities like Vancouver and Oregon City, as well as revamping Portland’s famous Steel Bridge.

"At this point, planners are in the brainstorming phase, and there are a lot of ideas on the table," said Tia York, spokeswoman for Portland’s transit authority, in an email to OregonLive. "Our hope is to develop concepts that will integrate with transit technology that will be available in 2040 and beyond."

It seems to me like they have a LOT of other more immediate problems that they should be using that money to address first. If they want to build anything underground, then they better fix and/or replace the 1800s infrastructure that was built underground over a century ago; like sewers and pipes which continues to erode and collapse.

If you ask me, that money could be better spent updating the various bridges and overpasses in the city which are very outdated and in dire need of repair and upgrade.

And they wanna build that shit into Vancouver?

No thanks. You guys keep your over-crowded dysfunction on that side of the river, thank you. We're a peaceful city who has our shit together.

I actually haven't been on the max in a long time but I assume it's the same. Back when I was 15-16 years old every weekend my friends and I would take the max from Gresham to Portland every weekend to skate at department of skateboarding, not far from rose quarter but it's gone now. We used to never pay either because they never checked but I heard they check a lot now, I could be wrong. Yeah, those max rides always resulted in seeing some interesting shit. A lot of crazy people so I could on,y imagine a subway system in that crazy city

I've seen some clips on porn sites of guys filming themselves ejaculating on unsuspecting women on public transport; usually in a former soviet country, or somewhere in south America.

Some guys also just like to haul it out and go to work right there in front of everyone.

That keeps me off of public transport.

uh, I tied up for a night last spring, at the public dock where the old Quay Restaurant used to be. I was not impressed with the locals present.

Back many years ago, I road the Street Cars in the metro area regularly. From what I see of the shit on Max, no way am I going to ride on that system.

Road the MBTA in Boston - Cambridge regularly too, never a hassle.

I ride the train and/or bus everyday and it is extremely rare to witness anything crazy or weird happen. About the worst thing you have to deal with is people who talk loud or play shitty music without headphones.

Max will be bankrupt and gone 20 years before completion of proposed subway which would be flooded every 7-8 years and require several additional transfers while bringing no legitimate benefits to taxpayers. PDX is in the grasp of seriously dangerous MORONS. Drain the swamp.

Mass transit = gangs, disease, urban blight and the death of the middle class.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Subway in Portland? Damn man! Have you seen the river running down 3rd avenue? I heard it ran down 5th avenue before my time and I wasn't in Portland in 48 when Van Port flooded. You know those planners would need subway access at 2nd and Ankeny or some such folly.

I haven't been down there in years, so I can't speak for that particular area. When I did visit though, the worst I ever had to deal with was the occasional homeless person. Most of that area is upscale townhouses for the rich. It's not uncommon to see high-end cars down there: Lambos, Ferrari, etc.

The rest of Vancouver, with the exception of parts of Fourth Plain Blvd, are pretty decent. ESPECIALLY by Portland standards. The East Side, where I live, is pretty laid back and organized. I lived for many years on the West Side of Vancouver, and it wasn't always great. A mix of old suburbia mixing mixing with newer urban infrastructure.

But again, by Portland Standards.......I'd take Vancouver any day of the week.

Years ago, when I lived in West Vancouver, there was big talk about bringing the Portland Max Line across the river to Vancouver. However, this was during the height of the gang shootings and fights that occurred on a daily basis on the Max. It was on the news every single day.

I had a survey woman come by my place and ask me to sign a petition blocking it, and I did so gladly. And I recall our mayor at the time flat out telling someone in the Portland Port Authority to get their shit together before such a plan would take place. We didn't want that shit coming over here.

Nothing ever came of the plan, and I hope it never does. There are few people here who would use the Max line just to go to Portland. It would be a waste of Vancouver tax payer's money.
