A sniper with Canada’s elite special forces in Iraq has shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a staggering distance of 3,450 metres.

Sources say a member of Joint Task Force 2 killed an Islamic State insurgent with a McMillan TAC-50 sniper rifle while firing from a high-rise during an operation that took place within the last month in Iraq. It took under 10 seconds to hit the target.

“The shot in question actually disrupted a Daesh [Islamic State] attack on Iraqi security forces,” said a military source, who stressed the operation fell within the strictures of the government’s advise and assist mission. “Instead of dropping a bomb that could potentially kill civilians in the area, it is a very precise application of force and because it was so far way, the bad guys didn’t have a clue what was happening.”

The kill was independently verified by video camera and other data, The Globe and Mail has learned.

“Hard data on this. It isn’t an opinion. It isn’t an approximation. There is a second location with eyes on with all the right equipment to capture exactly what the shot was,” another military source said.

A military insider told The Globe: “This is an incredible feat. It is a world record that might never be equalled.”

Geez! At that distance you would need to account for the rotation of the earth.

Now that we have the technology to really record events like this, I would put my money on this record being broken. Who knows, wasn't there some Roman that shot an arrow around the world or something? There just wasn't video evidence.

Good shot though. I prefer snipers to drone strikes.

That diagram really puts it in perspective. I was gonna post it if nobody else did. Just crazy. At two miles you're basically lobbing a bullet.

Magnus Effect, Coriolis effect, North/South vs East West, Latitude, all begin to have an effect.
The Mark 1A and it variants was the most complex ballast ever conceived.

On a hundred meter tower...the horizon would be over 34 km away...about half that lying on the ground...hell of a shot..I'd think the wind would be the X factor more than the rotation at that distance...less than a 10 second shot

This shot just blows my mind.

I have done a lot of 500 yard shooting at a range. Without going into details, the longest shot I ever made “in the field” was about 800 yards, but it took two shots to do it. My first shot was too low.

Sure the equipment, especially laser range finders are much more accurate now than the mechanical range finders I used. However, making a 3450 meter shot on the first try, in the field, is as close to impossible as it gets.

I do not believe this record is going to be broken by a human.

With a name like McMillan you know you can trust the rifles defensive capabilities!

    Not just wind.

At that distance, the temperature, your elevation above sea level, and barometric pressure also have an affect on the bullets flight path.

Warm air is less dense than cool air.
Elevation and barometric pressure also play a factor in how dense the air is and the amount of resistance it exerts on the bullet.
