BOS desperately needs bigs - and I mean DESPERATELY. Rebounding was their biggest weakness, by far, last season. They didn't have a single big that was even close to an average rebounder for his position. And, they've let both Olynyk and Tyler Zeller walk to free up space to sign Hayward.

2015-16 Ed Davis would be perfect for them. 2016-17 Ed Davis, not so much. Although, even in a down year, Ed was a WAY better rebounder than anyone on their roster. They don't need scoring from the 4 spot, just rebounding and defense. I'm sure they would love to get Noah Vonleh, but unless a 3rd team is involved, we can't help them clear enough salary to sign the Hayward deal.

Side bar: to those who think our crap contracts don't hurt us because it's Paul Allens' money and we shouldn't care how he spends it - this is an example of why some of us care. BOS has some very good players, players on great contracts, players who actually play defense, that we could use. They are looking to dump salary, but because we are over the tax apron, we can't help give them what they need. So, those very good payers on great contracts will likely end up elsewhere.

That said, and it still doesn't quite get BOS where the need to complete the Hayward signing, but it saves them $1.5 million (half of what they need) and most importantly, addresses their front court needs in a big way:

Ed Davis + Noah Vonleh for Jae Crowder + Marcus Smart

That gives BOS two rebounding, defensive bigs - one veteran + a 22-year old that has already proven he can play defense and rebound against NBA starters. Neither one can score much, but like I said earlier, that's not a big need for BOS at the 4 spot. They really need rebounding most of all, and defense out of that position. This gives them that in both the starting line up and coming off the bench. Vonleh is also young enough to fit well with their younger, up and coming players.

From our standpoint, that gets us TWO excellent perimeter defenders, which addresses our biggest weakness. Losing both Ed and Noah means we'd REALLY need our rookies to step up, but Neil seems very high on them. So, maybe it's time to put up or shut up.

Also, adding Crowder has a domino effect. It means Aminu (for sure) and possibly Harkless become trade bait. They are both on reasonable contracts. So, maybe move one of them for something of need. Perhaps a back up center, like Kyle O'Quinn (first choice) or Cole Aldrich. Harkless for O'Quinn + Lance Thomas works, as does Aminu for Aldrich.

BOS could then waive or trade Jordan Mickey for a future top 55 protected 2nd round pick to clear enough space to complete the Hayward signing.

So, who says no, Olshey or Ainge?

I'm pretty sure than even you questioned yourself when you wrote Ed Davis+Vonleh for Crowder+Smart :P

Cmon man, it's inconceivable that they say yes to that.If I was Ainge I'd die with Theis at PF spot than trading Crowder+Smart for these two. Plus the fact that I don't think Vonleh interests them at all because he ll be a RFA next summer.

Ainge. Doesn't save them enough and smart is worth more than that.

And if Theis is all they have at PF, they will die. They will absolutely get fucking killed inside. Theis wasn't even a starter on his Euroleague team at 25. Vonleh, at 22 has been a starter in the NBA for two seasons. Vonleh has proven he can defend and rebound at the NBA level. Thies averaged 8 reb/36 against inferior competition. Vonleh averaged 11 reb/36 against real NBA players - starters, no less. It will make all their maneuvering to sign Hayward for naught. You still need rebounding and interior defense to win in the playoffs. That killed them this year and will kill them next year if they don't get help up front.

Yes, Crowder is a good player, but he just became redundant. They are shopping both him and Smart to dump salary. At least this trade also helps address their biggest weakness.

Smart will also be an RFA next summer. They trade one future RFA from their surplus for one that addresses their biggest need.

I don't say they won't trade them. I say that 100% they ll find a better return than this. This is not nearly good enough in my opinion. We are probably not on the same page on how desperate they are. It happens.

It will be interesting to see who they get. They may end up doing two or three different trades to get them the combination of help up front, plus salary dump they need.

I'd put Bosh on our bench and limit his minutes..he'd be great for Vonleh to learn from..have to let Meyers go though in a trade for future picks in a salary dump.....honestly I think it would be cool for Bosh and Vince Carter to retire their last years in Toronto

He is a very good rebounder, but will need to time to adjust to the game.

He's legally allowed to play. League doctors, though, agreed with Heat doctors that his heart condition was too dangerous to play on.

    Ouch?

More $$$ than Crabbe, I suspect, and by the same team that made the big offer to him last year.

Why compare him to Crabbe? Porter is a year younger and a starter with a 17.3 PER. Crabbe is a 1-dimensional bench player with an 11.6 PER. Turner shoots the 3 just as well as Crabbe, on a lot more attempts, and does EVERYTHING else better than Crabbe. Of course he got a higher offer.

The trades in this thread are as realistic as any others in this forum's history. Fans (of any team) always want to devise ways to keep everyone they think are good and ship the garbage for some more good players.

They trades for PG13 and Cousins were likely viewed as unrealistic if looked at before they happened.
