Curious statement. What do you think you know, that prompted the post?

Seems like a rigid definition of art is needed to make the statement true.

I know when someone is baiting me and disrespecting my career.....I also know I'm comfortable with my path in life whether you respect it or not. I know that whenever you ask for my opinions you are not really interested in those opinions...scientific method ...I'm a decent ping pong player when the game is friendly

I'm not defining art....I'm saying a liberal arts degree is not necessary to be an artist, yet it is necessary for other professions...microbiologist...doctor, etc...what the fuck is rigid about that? my wife won national awards for art and is published in the Taiwanese nat'l art museums books 3 times...never took an art class in her life...but you wouldn't know that, I'm guessing. I've never practiced surgery having never studied medicine

Well, back to art and the rigid opinion.

Escher never considered himself an artist although he's one of my favorites...he thought of himself as an architect of sorts....

May I take a moment to differentiate between the thread title, "Conservatives think college is bad" and the poll results saying that "Republicans think that colleges and universities have a negative impact on the country." These are two very different concepts.

I think college is great, is important, and something I absolutely expect for my kids. However, I also think that a majority of colleges are unhealthily steeped in liberal ideology and often actively silence conservative voices, to the students'--and by extension, the country's--detriment.

It is not contradictory to love and value education and also be concerned about the current state and impact of American universities.

Thank you for clearly stating the obvious in a much more eloquent and less insulting way than I am capable.

I've posted this before and I think it is worth discussing.

teaching doesn't pay enough to attract conservative professors most often...many think of teaching as something you do when your company goes bust or you get fired....college is all about the syllabus material and it's good to be selective about your courses...if someone were more conservative and wanted to go to school in an area that supported that culture...they should go to a red state....the west coast and new England are way more liberal generally than the Midwest or south. There are choices for conservatives in higher education....private schools for the most part.

Why are people so afraid of debating topics and hearing different opinions? They're not scary. They're just opinions.

How does that work in practice? Will you forbid/discourage your children from attending the majority of colleges?

Not at all. My job is to spend 18 years exposing them to a wide range of ideas and encouraging them to think for themselves rather than just accepting what is given them, and hope/pray they take those lessons with them when they go to college.

I have no problem with people espousing liberal ideology. I get frustrated when it's presented as the only viable ideology. I get frustrated with conservatives who do the same (my in-laws are a prime example). However, I understand that there's no way to avoid that, so I hope only to prepare them for the deluge and hope for the best.

So if one of them decides to go to Evergreen, say, you wouldn't try to suggest they reconsider?

I'm just asking because if you believe that most colleges are net negatives, then it seems like you'd want to try to steer your offspring away from them.
