So what is in it for us? Lets say the guys develops throughout the year and becomes really sought after. Do we have any rights to sign him first to a real contract or does he become an UFA next summer?

One of them is two fewer years away.

He's only 21, too. No risk, but we could ultimately be rewarded.

How does this impact our cap if he gets called up?

The two way contract can be a creative tool, if used the right way.

First, they're guaranteed 75k and earn league minimum rates per day they're in the NBA (up to the max of 45 would be about 204k, for a total of 279k max a year). At any time, you can convert a 2-way into a standard NBA contract, as long as you have roster spot (cap room not necessary, as minimum contracts are exceptions in themselves). And you retain Bird rights.

So let's say we sign Young Mr. Baldwin for a 2-year two way and ship him to the Santa Cruz Warriors (b.c we don't have a G-League team). This year we call him up for 45 days when Shabazz has an ankle sprain or Patty C gets sick or we want to carry some extra defensive guards. Then this summer he works on his shot and handle and comes back in 2018-19 as a beast. We can sign him to a league-minimum contract (probably around 900k) and play him on the active roster. At the end of the year he's an Early Bird RFA that we retain rights to and can set up a qualifying offer for, and can go over the cap to resign him to a Jeremy Lin Contract if we'd like.

Btw just thinking ahead; Napier is a RFA at the end of the year. If we trade him, Baldwin could be a cheap replacement post deadline.

No reason not to do this. He may never amount to anything, but he has Avery Bradley type potential.

I'd rather the Blazers sign Keyser Soze.

I like his ability to finish and pass with either hand. The passing part especially is something that most PGs don't master for quite some time.

That is 'when' he passes. Seems like another shoot-first PG that is 6'3".
