That was one of my post viewing critiques. Force Awakens, faults aside, was tightly edited with no fluff and pedal to metal sequencing. Last Jedi, the exact opposite. But...Jedi certainly goes places Force Awakens doesn't dare. Johnson, did have an issue he inherited, and that was too many characters, so a lot of the decisions make sense with that in mind. With the 3rd installment, Abrams literally has 4 (5 if you count Phasma) less principal characters to play with then he did in Force Awakens, so I expect the editing to be more crisp again. I liked the Last Jedi more than most on here, but definitely a lot of head scratching. I've seen Force Awakens three times now, and my opinion on it improved with each viewing, so hoping Last Jedi plays out similarly. Also, I thought the dialogue suffered without Kasdan. If they could have Johnson write the story, Abrams direct and edit it, and Kasdan write the dialogue, that would be an interesting movie.
Few questions: 1. What happened between Snoke talking to Hux after he was pissed about getting bombed in the beginning of the movie. Hux just said "we have them on a string" with no other explanation. All of a sudden they were able to track them but I don't think they explained how other than "that's impossible!" 2. How did they know to call Maz Kanata. Finn just woke up and the pilot dude never met her I think. Such a random part of the movie to have her in there for a cheap shitty laugh.
That shit where they just shot at the ship with the shields up was straight out of fucking Spaceballs or some shit.
That plot hole bothered me too. To me, a better explanation would've been that there was a plant on the ship, who had some kind of tracking device, or that Fin had one implanted when he was indoctrinated as a storm trooper. Instead we had a "oh it's at the front of the ship!"...which doesn't really explain how Hux said they had them "on a string". No, you basically were just drifting them. Because of this movie, I think this might be the most I've agreed with anything you've ever said. Why all the sudden do they have a force field? Has that ever been in an episode before? Also, why would they keep firing (like you said)?
You give this script to Quentin Tarantino and you'll have a much better movie. Maybe he'll follow JJ Abrams from Trek to Wars.
Disney paid Lucas billions for the Star Wars franchise. I seriously doubt they'll let Tarantino make a Rated R Star Wars movie and not capitalize on the PG 13 market. They want their bucks and they want to recoup it quickly.
Just give it to Marvel. They at least know how to weave a story with continuity. Hell, they have found a way to tie together 17 movies and a shit ton of characters with their own story that will culminate with Infinity War. Star Wars can't seem to tie together two fucking movies with a consistent plot line and story arc.
https://www.yahoo.com/news/save-apos-star-wars-apos-122842126.html Fans are petitioning to have episode VIII stricken from canon and remade before episode 9, stating that Luke Skywalkers character was destroyed, as was everything fans like about the star wars universe. Its up to 7000 signatures
1.) Leia discovered they were tracking them through lightspeed. It showed her reaching out with the force to find this out. Apparently, it had to do with the tracking device that finn and rose were trying to turn off with DJ...though they failed. I had thought maybe Kylo was using the force to track them...as he is supposedly more powerful then any jedi besides rey...but yeah I think it was the tracking device that finn and rose were attempting to sneak onto the first orders ship and turn off. It wasn't well explained how it worked as was the same with most things in the movie. 2.) A very cheap use of Maz Kanata...I was hoping she would become a yoda like mentor figure to rey and end up being a force user. But, yeah what a stupid way to stuff her in there.
But the tracking device had to track something? Were they tracking the pilot guy somehow? Couldn't they just do this at any time then anytime they encouter a ship? I mean it just wasn't explained so the major plot of the movie your just sitting there like...huh?
The part where mini mouse uses the force because females in the hero roll is what is cool right now. VERY cool.
Just my own personal opinion, but it didn't have enough Lawrence Kasdan. Kasdan co-wrote Empire, the acknowledged best movie of the whole damn series. And he also the co-wrote the last one. His input has always been crucial to any success Star Wars had and it just wasn't there this time. Sort of like Walter Hill and Alien. When Walter Hill rewrote the Alien script he made it wholly something else and it became a franchise. The same with Kasdan and Star Wars. Also, in recasting the new series, they didn't get anyone like Han Solo. They got the sex appeal (Ren), they got the earnest do-gooder (Finn) but they didn't get the devil-may-care fly boy. Poe is close but no cigar. He's too clean. You could smoke grade-A level Naboo ganja with Han.
I just think I would have been happier if it was more about the island and her training. The whole story about being chased and going to the casino planet.... was just so stupid. Worse than anything in any of the prequels.
