The guy is a multi-millionaire over again. He owns tons of stuff in North Portland, including selling the property for that huge apartment building which is kitty corner from the restaurant. My family has been going there for 3 generations. I remember it used to be called Devlin's back in the day. Honestly, I like the place for what it is, but the food kind of sucks these days. My grandma goes there a couple times a week just to play video poker.

Their cinnamon roll french toast is off the hook.

What did you do at Bess Kaiser? My mom worked there for years. I was born there and lived down the block from there for about the first 7 years of my life.

Reading the article in the OP, I remember that my grandfather used to love getting liver and onions in Carrow's and Denny's. Was that an 80's thing? A Portland thing? A German-descent thing?

Your mom and dad met working at a Sambos?!?

    THAT.IS.AWESOME!

The original owner of the New Orleans Jazz was the founder of Sambos. Odd choice for a restaurant name in a city with a large black population. I guess that's why he moved the team to Salt Lake City.

Interestingly enough, it was probably when I went into the Marines before I knew that the name meant anything else. I thought, similar to Denny's and Shari's or McDonald's, it was the name of the owner (Bob Sambo's Restaurant or something). I know it was an amalgamation of the two owners, but had no other connotation.

Similar to when I came home from elementary school one day to tell my mom that other kids said they went "knicker-knocking" on doors in the neighborhood. That got me a talking-to when Dad got home.
