The fate of the people living in North America (whatever you wanna call them, and wherever you think they came from) was fucked. They were either going to be enslaved and sacrificed by Mayans, or conquered by white devils.
You do realize the natives had no concept of the continent as a whole, right? Our current system of mapping the world is almost universally accepted and based on continents as the largest land masses. Natives did not invent this system, the first explorers did. Naturally they named shit after themselves. There is no other term that encompasses this large of an area (north America). What do you suggest we call it?

Um because this part of the world hadn't been mapped on such a large scale, by natives or anyone else. Duh. 'Native American' is a scientific term used to describe the first inhabitants of what is now north America.
