lets say we have the full MLE ($8.5m) to offer. Who do we pursue? Will Barton JJ Redick Tyreke Evans Avery Bradley Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Trevor Ariza Marco Belinelli Mario Hezonja Nick Young Not saying all these players interest me, but these are the ones that probably fall in range. Redick will probably get more, but at his age, maybe not. I think we'll land Barton.
If Tyreke is available for MLE, that would be amazing for this team. I'd be shocked if he got that little. Hezonja would definitely interest me as well.
Not a great list IMO. How many teams have lots of cap room to offer more? It looks like there are about 6 top UFA's (who would never have come to Portland) and the Lakers can get two of them. That leaves 4. So how many teams will have money to go after them? Then how many more who are left that can offer more than 8.5? Take that number and eliminate the corresponding number of players from your list. Bottom line is we might not get a shot at all of those players....Right?
Yeah, I'm pretty much just trying to say that we have a chance to land Will Barton, and only Will Barton lol.
You know Will would consider us highly. But money talks. If someone threw a lot more at him then I expect him to go elsewhere. But if everyone is throwing what we are at him then he is ours imo (provided we want him, I know Dame does but who knows about the actual front office).
This is a false narrative. Portland will only have the TAX MLE to use (about $5M) without being hard-capped. You need to set your sights a little lower.
I still wonder if the plan is to bide our time until Anthony Davis becomes a free agent in 2020. At that point, currently, we only have four guys under contract during that summer. Obviously that could change if we sign Nurk/Bazz, but all our other massive deals run out at the same time.
Since they are under the Tax right now assuming they don't add more players by the end of the regular season they won't be a tax paying MLE. They will have Full MLE over the summer.
I'm certain that this will be an unpopular opinion... But my answer would be whoever allows us to trade CJ. Of the names listed, I'd go with KCP. But that's just me...
Posted in the trade deadline thread, but it's relevant here too. In July, if they want to keep Nurkic, they'll need to not offer any more than the taxpayer MLE, because use of more than that would cap them out at the apron (projected to be around $129M). The 9 salaries on the books for next year, plus the dead money, plus the charge for their first round pick, plus whatever non-tax MLE is given to whomever, would leave less than $10M to resign Nurkic, and that won't be enough. So yes, they will have full MLE, but it would be foolish for them to use it.
This is the new reality. Paul Allen will not pay luxury tax. I really think we can wave goodbye to Pat/Napier/Ed for sure. There is no way PA pays out the nose for this squad anymore. And no one on that list will take us to the next level, so doubt we even use these exceptions.
We could probably land Hezonja for the tax MLE. I doubt he'll cost more. He's close with Nurkic, I'm sure he'd consider it.
Exactly. As I said, they will only have the TAX MLE without being hard capped. That's not going to happen. Ya'll need to set your sights lower. These are the 'repercussions' of being near the lux tax line.
I don't see a way for him to avoid paying the tax the next 2 years (without completely blowing it up). Portland will be going for very cheep players this summer. I still think they re-sign Ed. Pat & Napier are gone unless they agree to <$3M per season.
That's not a question for me. I'm not convinced he would. But Dame has repeatedly said that he's the one guy that he would love to play with. Almost all of our contracts run out by that summer, with the exception of Dame/CJ/Collins/Swanigan/Nicholson.
You act like we didn't have one of the highest payrolls the last two seasons. The reality is he will pay if he thinks it will help, but not if it won't . Which is exactly how it should be.
