Yes Inc serious. What makes you think money Will get them here? You don’t think they want to be part of s winning situation like he players??? No amount of money will allow them to sign free agents. Do the Math. As far as money Evan, he didn’t talk. He got no offers anywhere else. Okay so you think ainge just ups and pulls from Boston if we offer him three times his salary??? I highly doubt it.
Hey Surge, Long time no talk to. How are things in Bend? Oregon Live finally shut down their forums so migrated back over to here. Sly guaranteed the same pay I was making at Olive, lol.
WTF?? The only pay I get from that mutt is paybacks for being a forum smartass... and those paybacks...Im still paying him back!
I look around the league and see NO as one of the top 5 or 6 GMs, period. The problem is you get rid of him, you have a slim chance of getting someone any better. No GM is perfect in their drafting ability. Yet we have one of the better backcourt combos in the league. The bigs he's drafted are all 3pt shooters. His 2nd round picks, Crabbe and Connaughton both turned into NBA regular rotation players. The Nurkic trade was brilliant. He turned mediocrity at the C position into a 23 year old (with a future) who's getting us 14.3 PPG and 8.2 rebounds in ~27 minutes. NO has made big offers to the top FAs, but they won't come here. That's something any GM here is going to have to deal with. Signing ET was one of the only ways to get an FA to come here. Target someone just under the top tier and go get him while the other teams pick over the top tier guys. Judging talent is only half the game as GM these days. The other half is figuring out the puzzle that is a roster within the confines of the CBA. At this latter thing, I don't know anyone can do it better. And it's a HUGE deal. The Blazers have made the playoffs in each of NO's seasons, starting with season 2. It's season 3 of the rebuild, and we're on pace to have our best record of the 3. Looks like progress and not stagnation or getting worse. Guys we've traded for haven't looked as good for us as they have for their other teams. Jamal Crawford is the obvious example. Just because you think we'd be better off on paper if we finagled the CBA to get those players instead of the guys we have doesn't mean we're a better team. We're currently 5th seed, tied with OKC. OKC's big acquisitions of PG and Melo didn't make them a better team than ours. The grass isn't always greener.
I believe Evan is on record as saying he couldn’t turn down the MONEY and then backtracked, bottom line we overpaid to get him here. Yes I do believe a top 5 gm would come here on a 4 year deal if we tripled their pay. Even if they didn’t find success they just made what it would of taken them 12 years to make at their previous job, what human wouldn’t do that, have you ever turned down a 300% raise? They can always return to a better free agent destination in year 5 if they are that unhappy here. Think about it.
I have thought about it. My opinion is you are wrong. A top five gm would rather spend twelve years with a winning, stable organization at a third of the pay, than to spend it at a destination universally perceived as not able to get free agents and a media that is extremely impatient and critical. But that’s only my opinion. I could be wrong but I do not think that I am. I believe no is about the best we will get on average and he doesn’t even like it here.
I believe with most everything you said except that statement. There is always somebody who will do well but has never been given the opportunity. It can be for a number of reasons. You just have to find the right person who's faced adversity and overcome it. There is always a Theo Epstein, a Billy Beane, or an Ozzie Newsome who just need to be given the opportunity to build a franchise. It just takes guts and risk to give them a shot.
musta been dog food from Sly, life is good, retired 3 years ago and have not looked back! Bend is getting too big but I don't won't move so I'll whine instead! Hope things are good on your end
Did you know that you have to have permission to interview other team's GM's? We'd likely have to surrender draft picks just to get a GM under contract. Allen refused other teams to interview Olshey so why would other teams let you poach their top GM's? Well lets look at your targets and go through it case by case anyway. Danny Ainge-From Oregon so mayyyyyyyyybe? He's also a beloved Celtic though. His roster is really freaking good, he's got a great coach, and they are completely setup for the future. Why would he want to go somewhere with a bloated payroll and no extra future 1sts? Bob Meyers-I'm sure he'd want to leave his mega team for a team having to compete with them. RC Buford-How much of the success has been him and how much of it is Pop? Why would he leave SA? He doesn't strike me as a guy who cares strictly about money. LeBron James-Still has several years left of playing. I'm sure he'd want an ownership stake. Maybe in about 7-8 years. Who else would you add to this list? Don't you dare say Daryll Morey.
I was a couple of pages deep into this thread looking for this response. Thank you...you're earning your keep around here.
First of all you don’t need to interview any of them, they get the job if your able to get one. You could trade a pick for one, one could resign or force their way out which would probably lead to compensation paid to let them out of the remaining years on their contract. If a gm wants to resign though and is willing to pay back money is his current team really gonna want him around and say no? Would you have confidence in a gm you forced to stay and took millions out of his pocket by not letting him go to pdx. These are all hypotheticals but if it was known Allen would triple the salary of one of those guys I wonder what would happen.
Sounds like a great way to hire someone! So if Allen can't talk to a GM he should just release a statement to the media saying he'd pay Ainge $12 million a year if he forces his way out of Boston? The league would penalize us for tampering and then not allow us to sign him. Good plan! How about coming up with one that isn't completely fucking stupid.
Lol, calm down, it’s a sports forum. I don’t think a billionaire has to release a public statement to get a message to 5-6 general managers, it would be “fucking stupid” to think that.
"Hey Mr. Allen, I just wanted to have this super-special sit-down with you to ask if you really are committed to winning a championship. Oh by the way, please maintain the status quo and don't trade anybody, 'cause it's working out so well. kthnxbye." That's basically what you're suggesting. See the problem?
