My wife and daughter are highly susceptible to sunburns, so you best not order strawberry around me.

Ok - my last word in this thread

This is a community- deal with the fact that we view the world very differently and try not to take everything so seriously, even the stuff that deserves to be taken seriously. If you find yourself too worked up, step away. Or start a thread on the homliest animals, old Punky Brewster episodes or the Best Dsmn Tea in Portland.

    Peace be with you all.

But it's important, because I want to know if it's isolated to one person being offended by a word for their own personal reasons, or if it really is a widely regarded word with racist undertones. Pretty much everyone else in this thread has said that their previous interpretation of that word was as a slight towards rednecks. So for someone else to come in and say that it's insulting to black people, well, that's new information to me.

And then Dviss said that he wasn't saying that the word is generally racist, just that if you say the word to a black person it's racist.

Is it really so wrong to want to understand how to view this word moving forward?

It was news in a way to me too. But, African Americans have been unfairly labled as uneducated for a long time in american society so I get why he and all African Americans would take offense to that word.

I'll start a conversation. Usually something along the lines of "Help me understand"--not for the purpose of trying to defend my position, but simply for the goal of knowing where the other is coming from. Once I have a handle on that, then I'll probably respond with something to the effect of, "This is what I'm hearing, and I think I get where you're coming from. In contrast, how I see it is..." The goal being for both of us to understand the other, even if we end up disagreeing in the end.

I had a conversation identical to that just yesterday.

Also, I'm going to point out that none of you are real people to me. You're an online persona with opinions and beliefs. I don't know anything about you personally, and I don't really want to know anything. I don't care what race you are, or what age, or sex, or anything. I just want to debate topics and opinions. That, to me, is the whole point of a forum. If I wanted friends or relationships I would do it in person. I already have to be careful of what I say and to whom in the real world. Hell, I have to be careful what I say on facebook. I don't have to be careful what I say on here. The shroud of anonymity allows me to have the conversations that I want and the opinions that I want without fear of reprisal, so if I go after your opinion it's because that's why I'm here. I love to debate. I love to trade facts. I don't hold grudges. That's why I usually only attack posts, not posters. If I think your opinion is wrong, I'm going to dispute it. Plain and simple. I don't care if it hurts your feelings. Maybe I'm an asshole, but that's why I'm here..... so I can be an asshole.

See this is what I’m talking about bro...... how can you type this? How do you actually take the time to put this out there damn well knowing this is not being constructive to the situation. Knowing this is only making shit worse. This has to be just a game to you. No wonder shit is so tense in this country now. There is no compassion for those different than us.....

Not at all. Just giving you my viewpoint, that in a situation like that, if you come at the questioning in such a manner as to suggest that the other person is responsible to prove their perspective, then it won't go well. Not saying that was your intention, but I would say that's how it read to me.

    Just my opinion.

    Wait, what?

So if a word offends me, people should stop saying it?

Not saying he is, in this instance, but maybe someone is just overly sensitive?

Looking up the word on urban dictionary and its origin, there is nothing about it being used as a racial term. It's about making a mistake and using the word to imply a lack of education towards someone....anyone. Someone who takes it any other way, seems to be there own problem. No one should have to alter their term because someone took it in a way it was never intended.

    My 3 cents

Hate is a strong term. One I almost never use.

The only thing I hate is a racist. And I really feel more sorrow than hatred for them because their minds are small. But you like to attribute that word to me, simply because I call racism out.

    It's a defense mechanism.

I'm not saying that. But MFs need to read context.

To be honest, this was not directed at you. I’m sorry if you thought it was. I was talking about the 4 or 5 on here who regardless of topic come at everybody with different opinions than there’s.
