This thought has crossed my mind several time lately. Especially since I put TV aboard the MarAzul and have had time to watch some. More than I would like due to rain and wind here in Oxnard Cal. Then @PtldPlatypus triggered me as to what is really happening worth noting, maybe even figure out where it is going. "still having lives in a world that is no longer geared toward them." You see this on TV all the time now, the type of show and the ads they run. The over the air TV makes it even more clear than the Cable TV. The old standbys, at least in my sense, the networks run a lot of what I have no interest in and the ads show an America that I can not relate to or find in the actual demographic statistics. If you follow the ads, most of America is populated with cool black people that can jump high, or entertain everyone. You just have to have what they have or you just ain't got a shot. But then I see the country side around me. All Hispanic! Most speaking Spanish. Whoops! There is an Asian area close by, lot of Korean and Vietnamese residents. Not many black people in Oxnard or Bandon for that matter. How is it they are targeted by this Black leaning TV? Ah! Over the air channels of TV in their language. There must be 20 channels in Spanish here, 10 or so in Vietnamese, several in Korean and Chinese too. But Damn! I can only find one geared to old White guys, the Grit channel with old westerns movies. What is happening here? Do all the white people have to pick a group to get targeted?
Looks like lots of old white people TV is available to me. https://www.tvtv.us/ca/oxnard/93036/lu31784 Starting right now: 2-2 Newhart 4-2 Emergency! then Quincy 7-3 Night Court 13-4 Renegade, followed by Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue 28-1 He Touched Me: The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley 30-1 Criminal Minds 34-4 (The Justice Channel) Border Wars! 44-9 In the Heat of the Night 46-2 In the Heat of the Night 46-3 Corrupt Crimes 46-4 Death Valley (Old white people love this western!) 56-3 Gunsmoke (Old white also love this) 56-4 Movie "Gamera vs. Guiron" (Action, 1969) 56-8 The Avengers
I think this has more to do with keeping up with technology than it does not being targeted. TV is yesterdays media choice and the advertising is done in broad strokes. We get ads for all sorts of stuff that is not available to us in our area like Dave and Busters. For more targeting you should spend some quality time of facebook.
56-3 Bonanza is on! Then followed by The Rifleman. There is also a special on the wild oceans on PBS, 50-2.
4-2 - 2 hours of Murder She Wrote followed by Little House on the Prairie. Now that is some old white people classic TV!
Clearly, much of popular culture is influenced by hip hop, black culture, Millennials, etc . That’s not a bad thing. We old white guys dictated culture for a long time. When we were young, we boomers influenced pop culture differently, but not less. And anyway, I find no dearth of entertainment intended for me.
Looks like cable. But you do know that I really don't give a shit what is on TV other than is is not the Blazers. The observation has more to do with segments of TV targeting demographic groups.
All cable, though LA does have some weak PBS stations over the air, but too weak to pick up more than 25 or 30 miles away. This is what I see Portland TV looks like. Is this wrong?
No, the link and shows I posted are not cable. That is free over the air TV in Oxnard. You can find internet sites that will show you where to aim your TV antenna to get those channels.
What? You telling me what I can get here? Geez dog, I am here, I know where and what the transmitter are. Most of the list you put up are 63 miles away. I get the very strong ones most of the time, but the rest, most of the time I get about half the picture and 25% of the sound. Until the tide goes out, then the MarAzul drops below the sea wall and nothing. But then there are damn few people to target in this area with that content anyway. Hey? By the way, my FCC tech license is KF7Zxx.
You said you were in Oxnard. I posted a guide showing the over the air channels in Oxnard. You said that was cable. It's not. Just trying to help you out since it seems you are not very satisfied with the channels you have found so far. Sounds like you need a better antenna. Go here - https://www.frys.com/ac/storeinfo/oxnard-location-frys-electronics-hours-maps-directions They should be able to hook you up with a better antenna for a very good price. Here is an antenna with a 70 mile range. https://www.frys.com/product/9177538?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Here is one that is motorized. https://www.frys.com/product/8507469?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
Have you ever thought about reading a book??? It beats watching TV 99.9% of the time......this world is still geared to you. You just have to know where to look.
Starts at 4pm! Movie Gunfight at Comanche Creek A dective infiltrates a gang of outlaws who forced wanted men to participate in robberies. Western, 1964. Starring Audie Murphy
Man you ought to teach a class, you are just a bundle of help. I got the fucking antenna from Fry's. I guess you missed my post some time back about that experience. The friggin place is a wreck, shelves stack with shit labeled Parts! Like finding stuff at an estate sale, only larger. Most signs are in Spanish and few English speakers. But I did find the TV antenna, it suppose to work for 70 miles but it only works for the ones 63 miles away that are strong transmitters. You really need UHF and VHF antennas and UHF is the only ones that work long range. Vhf is all line of site. Hell, I can get the VHF one on my VHF radio antenna mounted on top the mast. But only one is that close. So then I got another from Best Buy, then another at some other store. With all three hooked up in tandem and amplified, I get a few more channels well. If I went to a Yagi, I would need a tracking system to keep it on target and then it would need to be up the mast 20 feet. Boat is dancing about right now in 25 knots of wind like a balloon puppet on a tether. One of the cool things though is training one of the antennas on the building sort of behind my moorage. I get the rebound of the strong signals when the tide is out. It helps.
