My 89 year old grandmother mows and weedwhacks her own yard. In the 80s when my grandfather was retired she worked in the laundry at the Shiloh Inn in Salmon Creek to make extra money. Being pro Latino because they work as hard as prior generations of Americans says more about Americans than it does Latinos.
Winco didn't take credit or debit for years but they still had card readers in the stores. Care to guess why?
One more thing. Oregon and Las Vegas might as well be on different planets for this discussion. In Las Vegas they don't have Spanish accents they speak Spanish. Show me a whole area of Portland that is Hispanic. Show me miles and miles of businesses that have no English on the outside. It isn't even close to the same thing.
Winco has accepted debit cards since rebranding from Waremart and Cub Foods to Winco in 1999. They have never accepted credit cards.
Yeah I can't find any dates but all I had was a debit card in the early to mid 90s and remember having to take cash out of the atm in the store a couple of times. Still don't have any credit cards, the wife does to keep her credit score higher.
Vegas and California are similar. They're speaking of Oregon. Wonder what Einstein would think? https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/jun/12/einsteins-travel-diaries-reveal-shocking-xenophobia
I used to work at a grocery store in Gresham (granted, that was over a decade ago) But, I can assure you that MANY people use EBT's. Come out to the Winco near Gateway, or off 122nd and San Rafael, or in Gresham.
They don't. Everyone has visa debit cards and I thought they were taking them. Don't use credit cards.
It's true I guess. I located a Winco in Ventura Cal hoping for a better alternative to the Ralph's and Vons in Oxnard. Winco was only a little farther on down street from Vons, although it was actually in Ventura, not Oxnard. So I went in with my tote bag and gathered up my small load of stuff I needed. I use my own bag because I need to get it all the way down the docks to the boat. Need a strong bag, not just one that will make it 1/2 way. Anyway, I had the bag full, and unloaded it on the checkout conveyor. Clerk checks me out and I stick my Visa CC in the card reader. No go! The clerk asked me if it is a debit card? No, CC! We don't take CC's! I tell the other clerk, who is loading my bag, better unload the bag, I can't pay. He does, I leave. Winco says (online) that they take Debit Card but not CC to speed up the Check out process. That is bullshit, the process is the same.
I've paid by debit at Winco 25 years ago. Had a big problem with them at that time 'cause I got double billed. Edit: Beaverton, Oregon
Q: Does WinCo Foods accept credit cards? A: Due to the transaction rates associated with credit card processing, our employee-owned stores do not accept credit cards. We accept debit cards that require a pin number. https://www.wincofoods.com/customer-service/faqs/##creditcards
We used to tell customers, when I worked there over a decade ago, it lowers the prices groceries are by not having to put the merchant rates into the merchandise. That's one of the ways Winco keeps things cheaper than the Safeways and Fred Meyers of the world. Also, kinda your own fault. They have no credit card signs posted all over the entrance.
