Jason quick should ask Neil Why he promised Simons to draft him while he wanted to trade the Pick for a Veteran
Press conferences are not the same as signing a player to a contract.... Teams still hold press conferences because they hold the players rights and are under that teams control.
That was probably decided when they brought Simons back for a second workout. There were even reports of them trying to move up (presumably to secure Simons because there were other teams interested, Lakers being one)
I watched part of the replay of the Blazers draft broadcast. Although the crew talked about a few other players during the broadcast, when it came time for Portland's pick, they talked about one and only one player: Anfernee Simons. There was not a hint of excitement before or after the pick. It was pretty obvious they knew.
Yeah I doubt Olshey went into draft night still hopeful of landing a vet. It’s not like GMs wait until theyre on the clock to pick up the phone. I bet most in the league even knew how far Porter would fall.
I'm still fighting the idea the Simons can't play this year because he is too skinny. Lou Williams (who is my closest comp at this point) has never been more than 6'2" (NBA height) and 175 lbs. Clearly Lou has a problem playing in the NBA because of his slight build right? I must have been drinking too much all those nights he torched us off the bench. More and more I believe that Simons will follow the trajectory of Collins. We won't see him in games at all for the first few months, then he will get his chance, then we will see him more regularly. I think the biggest challenge to Simons getting minutes is how well Trent and WB4 play this year. I like Simons, but personally I'm pulling for WB4 to step into that role 6th man this year.
I'm not sure that there is a link. I did a quick search and didn't see one. It was broadcast on the local Comcast Sports Network station. Maybe someone else can find it
Olshey mentioned that Trent will guard more SFs to begin this career than SGs. Simons is pretty much a SG, and Baldwin is a point. In theory you could see all three together. Of course if you see all three together next season, something went wrong.
Or something went really really right, and they all progressed so much they become major contributors off the bench together.
If you started Aminu, that would be an interesting line change down the road. WBIV Simons Trent Collins Davis
Not likely with our starting unit, but I would love a second unit that locks down the other teams bench. Collins and Ed already make a splash in that area.
Did he say this at the presser? Woj mentioned on the broadcast that Trent was plug and play at the 2/3, so would enforce what he said at the draft. Seems like they think Trent might follow Collins trajectory.
