How were they going to keep their defensive identity? Hes the best defensive player in the league. The Spurs had no way to avoid getting worse defensively.

Poeltl is an underrated asset in this trade too. He’s a high pick from just two years ago, has been generally fine and showed good improvement last season and will probably be Spurs best center immediately (Gasol is 40 or so).

People really underrate this package for Kawhi. Spurs did not want to rebuild, they wanted to get players who are ready to play now and could not have got any that were both young and already good. DeRozan is really not a terrible player to be calling this package very unimpressive.

If they were going for a vet, get one who near average defensively and don't give up 3&D Green.

Toronto is stupid for this trade just like we would be of we traded for him.

    He's opting out.

Colin Cowherd is a fool right now talking that LA will trade for him. Why would they do that when he'll just opt out and come over in 19'?

Y'all are FOOLS if you think Pop was going to trade him West.

He basically sent him to Siberia.

For one season. Then he's going to LA.

    IDGAF what Paul George did.

Good for Toronto; shit for SAS.

Toronto, possibly, just wanted out of Demar’s contract based on mumblings on a twitter, because he isn’t good enough (in masai’s) opinion at least. Did that and got Kawhi. At worst, it’s a salary dump for them to start fresh with no contracts on cap after giving it one last run.

Spurs - Terrible. DeMar DeRozan can’t shoot 3s AND is defensively challenged. You can’t decisvely say DeMar DeRozan is better than CJ McCollum, given CJ shoots the 3 ball a helluva lot better and still has the beautiful mid range game.

Spurs spacing is going to be something to watch.

Yeah, they got a good deal. An all star, a first, and a decent big for a guy everyone knew was leaving? That’s impressive. And they even got to dump Green lol!

You’re assuming that Kawhi does more than make the cameo appearance necessary to collect his paycheck. At least Toronto is closer to his team of private rehab consultants in NYC than San Antonio was.

Who cares about the EC title? It’s about building a Title contender

That team has no chance against whoever comes out of the West, and frankly it doesn’t have much of a chance against the Sixers or Celtics, imo.

They needed to keep DeMar for this to be a needle-mover.

An all star that wouldn’t be an all star if he played in the West.
A first that is most likely going to become 2 second rounders

    Crazy

Keeping Demar gets them closer to a title than adding a potential top 5 player in his place?

It's a different philosophy, and maybe the wrong one, but hypothetically if SA was willing to trade him west for a pack as he involving CJ it might have put us in a good spot this year.

For giggles let's say CJ, Aminu and a 1st for Leonard and Green

    A lineup of

    Dame/Baldwin
    Green/Curry/Simons
    Leonard/Harkless/Turnrr/Trent jr
    Collins/Swanigan
    Nurkic/Leonar_

    Sign a fa big

Is pretty damn good. Better than what we have now.

IF Leonard walks, what did we really lose?

I don’t like hypotheticals. Call it whatever you want, DeRozan is better than anyone we got outside Dame.

And there’s a better chance that they get that first than not.

You don't think Toronto is finishing top 20 next year?

True, but if they get that first it's going to be a late first rounder and next years draft isn't suppose to be very strong so it very well could be a player that doesn't cut it.
