Vonleh: talented under-achiever. Swanigan: less talented, but looks like he might be an over-achiever.

Some people say you should always gamble on talent. I'm not convinced that is true - and this case is a good counter-argument.

I'd take Vonleh over Swanigan any day.

I have to disagree. Vonleh was given multiple chances. The team wanted and needed him to play up to his talent. Instead, he played his way off the team. Swanigan at least gives an honest effort.

I always thought they way they treated Vonleh was weird, he would start and even if he was playing well would get pulled early and you would never see him again. It seemed like he had “some” game, but wasn’t developing the way they wanted. I thought if he had a consistent 20ish minutes a game he could’ve been ok.

A lot of it was probably the coaches pulling Vonleh while he was on a roll before he made a mistake. A lot of young guys only focus on the negative so if you pull them before it happens you hopefully help them gain some confidence.

You very well could be right, but I remember quite frequently thinking Noah has liked 6 points and 4 rebounds and has played like 6 minutes and I guess he’s done for the night. Now obviously he had plenty of non productive 6 minute outings too, but I just felt they way they were trying to develope him felt, odd (I should think of a better word for it).

I would agree that it did feel odd. I think NO and Terry kind of figured Vonleh wasn't the answer about half way through his second season with us. He started fewer games in that season compared to his first season and I think NO knew he could possibly get a couple good PFs in the upcoming draft or two.

IMO it's better to make a young player feel confident that they will get an opportunity to play through their mistakes, and use those mistakes as a teaching opportunity. For example, Tony Parker made A LOT of mistakes and bad plays when he came into the league. Pops rolled with it and molded Parker into the player he became. (Yes, I know Vonleh isn't Parker, LOL, it's just the example that "Popped" into my head.)

Vince Carter to Atlanta. That just seems weird.

I wanted him the past few seasons, would’ve been a good locker room vet, gives you 15 solid minutes, can shoot.

    Rather have him than Stauskas

Apparently the problem was Vonleh couldn't learn from his mistakes and was uncoachable.

    Here's the thing:

Caleb is gonna have to play center. Even when both he and Zach are sharing the floor.

Who's better suited to do that, Noah or Caleb?

Presumably because he's too slow to effectively guard the majority of the league's PFs. He'll have to be a Chuck Hayes-type.

So he's going to protect the rim?

    That's just as bad!

And thus, why he will not see the floor much next year.

Considering the archetype I referenced blocked a total of 237 shots over his 644 game career, it's probably safe to assume that I wasn't suggesting Swanigan would/should be a rim protector.

Nurk and Collins will play majority of minutes at center. Aminu and Hark and Collins will share minutes at the 4. Meyers will be behind them. Caleb is riding the bench.

You gotta ask that? He can't defend PFs.
