I don't know much about him, other than he was a San Francisco icon. Should have made it Darcelle X Blvd
Been to El Gaucho twice and my wife and I got terrible steaks both times. Service and side dishes were very good. Good ambiance. Before I met my wife, I once went into a bar called something like Flight 94 or something like that. We had to go past a cafe and into a place in the back. My buddy and I went back there, me first. The first thing I saw was a bunch of guys dancing with each other. Then, I noticed all the tables had nothing but guys sitting there. I said "Mike, this doesn't look right. All I sss is guys." Mike says "Its dark in here and your eyes are playing tricks on you." Of course, we were looking for chicks not guys. We sat down and before we could order drinks Mike says "Uh oh, I think we'd better go." We got outta there fast. Haven't been back since and that was almost 50 years ago. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
What was that little diner on Stark back in the day, it was open late night and I remember a lot of drag queens and club kids would go there since there was really nothing else open. EDIT: https://www.theroxydiner.com/
Never ate there. Just past through it to get to the night club. Looked like a greasy spoon to me. Went to Darcelle XV once with my wife. She ordered a red wine which arrived right when the lights went out and the waitress spilled it all over her new white dress. That was the end of that dress. Also went to a drag show in San Francisco which was well done but I prefer to see women perform as does my wife. My wife enjoys show girls dancing around some man who has center stage. We're both pretty old fashioned.
That was one of my favorite places downtown and a hangout during my early 20s....three or four times a week with friends, late night/early morning pancakes or chili cheese fries, reading the National Enquirer wallpaper in the bathroom, and jukebox tunes.
True Portlander right there Lol. I worked at the Living Room Theaters on the corner 10th/Stark when it first opened in 2006-7. Was the Panarama night club before that (one of the biggest in town). Rumor has it had hidden S&M dens, showers and secret passageways. @EL PRESIDENTE's kind of place.
The equivalent of renaming the city of Astoria, OR to Bloombergia, OR. Stark was an important part of Portland, OR history. Milk was an important part of San Francisco, CA history. In the meantime, Mayor Wheeler, the city of Portland is a major shithole under your watch.
I've always thought when a new name needs to be added for a location the location ought to be a new one. For example, JFK hight school ought to be a new high school whereas I would never rename Cleveland High School to JFK High School.
I get that. I think streets are different. I fine as long as they don't start naming streets in Portland after Trump.
I believe Stark & Pettyygrove were the first two owners of the land that is now Portland. I know it was purchased for $50K, according to "Early Portland a Stump Town Triumphant"
It's only a 13 block stretch of SW Stark downtown that is being renamed Harvey Milk St. Caesar Chavez/39th was weird for me because I've lived on 39th in three different locations as a kid, and have lived 10-15 blocks away from that street most of my life. If I'm talking to someone who transplanted here I'll call it Caesar Chavez, but if it's family or an old friend I say 39th.
