Migrant caravan: Mexico to deport group which stormed US border Mexico will deport up to 500 migrants who attempted to storm the US border, according to its interior ministry. The group were rounded up after trying to cross the border "violently" and "illegally" on Sunday, the ministry said in a statement. Video footage shows dozens of people - including women and children - running towards the fence that separates the two countries near the city of Tijuana. They were repelled by tear gas used by US border officers. Mexico's interior ministry said in a statement that a group of "nearly 500 migrants" had "tried to cross the border in a violent way". Those identified as having taken part in these "violent events" would be deported immediately, it said. The ministry added that, "far from helping their objectives", the migrants' actions had violated the legal migration framework and could have led to a "serious incident". Humanitarian crisis develops in Tijuana What is the migrant caravan heading to US? Tensions have been high in Tijuana since the arrival of thousands of migrants earlier this month. The migrants are in Tijuana after travelling more than 4,000km (2,500 miles) from Central America. They say they are fleeing persecution, poverty and violence in their home countries of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. However, they now face a long wait to see if their asylum applications will be accepted by the US, with President Donald Trump vowing to keep each migrant on the Mexican side of the border until courts have decided their case. This could take months. The vehicle suspected of striking Weyant, a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier, was abandoned farther east on the 1300 block of Cincinnati, police said. The vehicle had damage to its hood and a shattered windshield. Investigators dusted the vehicle for fingerprints. Mandy was a sixth grade teacher at Eastwood Heights Elementary School. Honduran president's brother accused of conspiring to import tons of cocaine to US By Samuel Chamberlain | Fox News A brother of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez was charged by federal prosecutors Monday with conspiring to import tons of cocaine to the United States, as well as weapons offenses and lying to federal agents. Juan Antonio Hernandez Alvarado, aka Tony Hernandez, was arrested Friday in Miami and was due to appear in federal court there on Monday Federal prosecutors in New York described the suspect, a former Honduran congressman, as "a large-scale drug trafficker" who worked for more than a decade with compatriots as well as traffickers based in Mexico, Colombia and other countries to receive, process and distribute cocaine making its way through Honduras en route to the United States. Hernandez used cocaine laboratories in Honduras and Colombia, where some drug packages were stamped with the initials "TH," according to investigators. Prosecutors also said Hernandez coordinated and occasionally provided security for drug shipments within Honduras, even using members of the country's national police force for the job. The drug-related corruption allegations that swirled around Tony Hernandez have cast a shadow over his brother's government in a Central American country that is a major transit hub for cocaine. Honduras is also the homeland of thousands of migrants who recently have been traveling toward and are now camping out at the U.S. border with Mexico, saying they are escaping a poor economy and oppressive gang crime. "Hernandez was involved in all stages of the trafficking through Honduras of multi-ton loads of cocaine that were destined for the U.S.," Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in a statement. Raymond Donovan, who heads U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration special operations, said Hernandez is accused of working with "some of the world's most deadly and dangerous transnational criminal networks" to "flood American streets with deadly drugs." The indictment also claimed Hernandez paid and took bribes to smooth the flow of drugs and money — at times paying off law enforcement officials for information to safeguard drug shipments, and at others soliciting bribes for himself and other high-ranking officials. A convicted trafficker, Devis Leonel Rivera Maradiaga, testified last year in New York that Hernandez asked him for a bribe in exchange for government contracts. Rivera was trying to get Honduras' government to pay its debts to a company his cartel used to launder money. The indictment said Rivera paid Tony Hernandez $50,000 during their video-recorded 2014 meeting. In a statement after the testimony, Tony Hernandez denied involvement in illegal activities and said he was "at the disposition of Honduran or international justice for any investigation." He noted that he'd given voluntary testimony to U.S. investigators in Miami in 2016 and testified to Honduras' Public Ministry last year. "I reaffirm strongly that I am ready to collaborate with any investigation that is carried out in a serious fashion," he said. "And like I did before, I am ready to present myself again to authorities in the United States if it is required because he who doesn't owe, doesn't fear." After his brother's arrest Friday, the president's administration reiterated an earlier statement that "no one is above the law, and every person must have the right to a legitimate defense and be presumed innocent." The statement also said that the president maintains that everyone is responsible for his or her actions and can't shift accountability to other people. They can accept these “gifts” from anybody – including from the people who have business before the Board. Frederic J. Brown/AFP/Getty Images The Trump administration regularly asserts that undocumented immigrants are predatory and threaten public safety. Immigrant advocates say that talk demonizes an entire class of people. Now, four academic studies show that illegal immigration does not increase the prevalence of violent crime or drug and alcohol problems. In the slew of research, motivated by Trump's rhetoric, social scientists set out to answer this question: Are undocumented immigrants more likely to break the law? Michael Light, a criminologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, looked at whether the soaring increase in illegal immigration over the last three decades caused a commensurate jumpin violent crimes: murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. "Increased undocumented immigration since 1990 has not increased violent crime over that same time period," Light said in a phone interview. Those findings are published in the current edition of the peer-reviewed journal Criminology. In a separate study, these same researchers previously looked at nonviolent crime. They found that the dramatic influx of undocumented immigrants, similarly, did not drive up rates of drug and alcohol arrests or the number of drug overdoses and DUI deaths. Finally, a research paper appearing in the current edition of the U.K. journal Migration Letters shows that youthful undocumented immigrants engage in less crime than do legal immigrants or U.S.-born peers. All of this comes as no surprise to Art Acevedo, the police chief in Houston, which has one of largest undocumented populations in the nation. The chief has been publicly critical of the immigration crackdown. "There's no wave of crime being committed by the immigrant community," Acevedo said. "As a matter of fact, a lot of the violent crime that we're dealing with is being committed by people that are born and raised right here in the United States." For decades, social science focused on the extent of crime committed by legal immigrants. These new studies are important because they're among the first to explore the link between crime and illegal immigration. The research proves what Acevedo and others suspected. "Having worked around this community my entire professional career, which is about 32 years, I know that the vast majority of them that I've encountered are hard-working. They're here to earn an honest living," Acevedo said. But the new research may not move the needle in the immigration debate. Texas Republicans, for instance, have potent opinions about undocumented immigrants. "I have no quarrel with anybody of any ethnicity, but I don't like criminals. And I think that not having people be citizens leads to criminality," former La Grange, Texas, City Councilman Arnold Romberg says. He's sitting on the courthouse square in Fayette County, where voters went for Trump by a 4-to-1 margin. Ed Dykes, a local electrical engineer, says a crime committed by an undocumented immigrant is one too many. "It's actually immaterial whether they commit more crimes or not because they commit additional crimes," Dykes says. "They are crimes that would not be committed. There are American citizens who'd be alive today if [unauthorized immigrants] were not in this country." A recent poll showed that 7 out of 10 GOP voters in Texas support the proposition that all undocumented immigrants should be deported immediately regardless of whether they have committed a crime there. Justice Department to appeal judge's order barring US from refusing asylum to illegal immigrants By Nicole Darrah | Fox News US asylum laws at the border explained Former U.S. Customs and Border Protection official Theresa Cardinal Brown weighs in on how immigration law is being applied to the migrant caravan. The Justice Department on Tuesday said it plans to appeal a court order barring the government from refusing asylum to immigrants who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. The department filed a notice of plans to appeal the order to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and also requested that District Judge Jon Tigar issue a stay of his Nov. 19 order. President Trump on Nov. 9 issued a proclamation that said anyone who crossed the southern border between officials ports of entry would be ineligible for asylum. Secretary Nielsen blasts 'dangerous' ruling on asylum policy The administration insists it must regulate asylum claims, partly because of the caravans of migrants that are starting to arrive at the border. Hours after Tigar issued the nationwide injunction, Trump said he was "going to put in a major complaint" about the appellate court, which is based in San Francisco. He also criticized the Ninth Circuit, and called it a "disgrace" and alleged on Twitter that the court has "Obama judges." Tigar was nominated by former President Obama in 2012 to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Asylum is intended for people who have fled their countries of origin because they have suffered persecution or fear that they will be persecuted if they are forced to return. DHS blasts ’60 Minutes’ segment on family separation: ‘Agenda-driven work of revisionist fiction’ By Brian Flood | Fox News The Department of Homeland Security called a “60 Minutes” report “a platform for the misleading narratives of open-borders advocates.” The Department of Homeland Security blasted “60 Minutes” on Monday in a scathing statement that called a segment from Sunday’s episode “an agenda-driven work of revisionist fiction” – but the CBS News program is standing by its story about families being separated at the border. The “60 Minutes” investigation by correspondent Scott Pelley explored the Trump administration's strict immigration policies. “Our investigation has found that the separation of families began far earlier and detained many more children than the administration has admitted,” Pelley said. The report apparently infuriated President Trump, who took to Twitter, labeling it “phony,” but DHS took things further on Monday. “’60 Minutes’ irresponsibly aired flawed reporting, which displayed disregard for the truth and a fundamental misunderstanding of our nation’s immigration system and the Administration’s zero-tolerance policy for prosecuting illegal border crossers. DHS chose not to participate in the taping of this hit piece as it was clear from the start this was an agenda-driven work of revisionist fiction,” DHS Assistant Press Secretary Katie Waldman said in a statement. “The piece inaccurately conflated the responsibilities of the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services—the former apprehends illegal aliens (including minors) for illegal acts and the latter is responsible for care and custody of unaccompanied alien minors,” Waldman continued. “Additionally, ‘60 Minutes’ was complicit in allowing one interviewee to peddle absurd fabrications about the actions of the men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol as they carried out the Administration’s zero-tolerance policy.” A “60 Minutes” spokesperson told Fox News that the program stands by its story. Pelley’s report featured the story of a three-year-old boy named Immers, who was separated from his parents after illegally crossing the border. The story also highlighted a Homeland Security internal investigation that quoted the department's inspector general as saying DHS was “not fully prepared" and "struggled to provide accurate, complete, reliable data on family separations.” But the DHS spokesperson also said the “60 Minutes” segment “did not result from real journalism with robust fact-checking” and “simply served as a platform for the misleading narratives of open-borders advocates.” Waldman went on to say that “60 Minutes continued to ignore the reality that at least the last two administrations had held children separately from illegal alien adults in cases where it was necessary for the welfare of the child or to prosecute a federal crime” and that no administrations – including the current one -- have done this for the purpose of breaking families apart. “Any suggestion to the contrary is simply false,” she said. “Instead, for years, illegal alien adults and minors have been separated in cases where the adult poses a danger to the child, or the parents are being prosecuted for a crime that involves them being transferred to a prison-like setting where housing minors would be inappropriate. At no time did DHS adopt a blanket policy of separating minors from adults nor did DHS separate for the purposes of deterrence.” Waldman’s lengthy statement concluded: “As more illegal alien adults than previously were charged with crimes under the Administration’s zero-tolerance policy, there was necessarily an increase in the number of minors held separately. Similar to what happens in courts in every jurisdiction in the country, no one wanted to place minors into criminal custody simply because their parents had committed a crime. We also note that Judge Dana Sabraw of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, in his Order of June 26, 2018, in the litigation dealing with this precise issue, ruled that, in recognition of the Obama-era practice, ‘parents and children may lawfully be separated when the parent is placed in criminal custody.'"
