I think we should just name the team Doug. Not the Portland Doug or the Oregon Doug. Just Doug. We could claim it's short for Douglass Fir, but I just want to look at the standings and be able to quickly pick out my team:

    Seattle Mariners
    Doug
    San Francisco Giants
    Oakland A's

    See how it jumps out.

I also want to be able to go to the games and cheer "Go Doug!".

Sometimes there is elegance in simplicity.

    Terrible idea...for personal reasons!
    Like "Fir" better.
See how fir that ball went?

Maybe we can take naming rights one step further and name the team after a sponsor.

What about the Portland Tanks? We have Camp Withocomb and Camp Rilea nearby for the military tie in and think of the headlines when the team wants to purposely lose games.

Why not Portland Sucks? It works great as a chant, a headline, and a team name.

Yeah.... I didn't then and even now don't want a casino in the middle of my city.

Casino jobs suck too. They're low paying jobs.

But there are also the associated construction jobs, which would have been high playing jobs at a time when Oregon's economy was in the toilet due to the post Y2K tech slump. It would also increased tourism, and tourists stay in hotels, eat in restaurants, shop in stores, etc. while they are here which brings is a lot of out of state dollars. Plus, we would have gotten a free baseball stadium and a major league team. Again more high paying construction jobs and tourism dollars.

Also, as Jaynes mentioned it may have helped create a large hotel in the Rose Quarter, which would have led to more convention business (possibly even hosting the NBA all star weekend).

I don't personally gamble, but I do go to Vegas for an occasional 4-day weekend to stay at a nice hotel, eat in some nice restaurants and take in some shows. In those cases, Nevada, not Oregon, gets my tourism dollars. And, that's just little old me...

My grandpa always told me, "any job is a good job". It's something I've lived by in my young adult life and I've never been unemployed for more than a month or two.

IDK much about that whole casino near Portland campaign, but it wasn't planned inside city limits I thought, just nearer the population base?

Sorry. Not swayed. I don't want a casino in the middle of my city and most polled agreed.

Please don't act like a casino here would make you not take your trip to Vegas. People don't only go there to gamble, it's the entire experience.

Otherwise Spirit Mountain would get your tourism dollars.

Sorry, I don't want my kid working in a casino ever. Especially for beans.

It's like you and @Boob-No-More forgot we voted measure 82 DOWN with over 71% of the vote. We said no to "The Grange". Portlanders by an overwhelming majority don't want a private casino inside of city limits. Nor did we want to amend our constitution to do it.
