I like to control my own destiny on tips as well. I have been to a few places where the tip was mandatory x % absolutely the worst service I ever got. I went to one place with a lot of my co -workers during a training seminar in California we were loud and crude as most mechanics are when given pub food and alcohol. I paid for the tab on my credit card to get the miles while everyone paid me for their meal/drinks/tips I laid down 160.00 dollars or so for the tip on the table (old school) on a $500.00 tab and was preparing to leave when the waitress came over and started bitching at me that I needed to leave a 10 percent tip. I asked her if she was sure about that and she said yes with about as much disdain as anyone can manage. I said ok if you insist I picked up the money from the table and counted out 50 dollars and said wow good service to make me take back 110 dollars on your tip and walked out.
When something is mandatory you get as little as possible then when you have to earn it. Just because you brought me my food that you are being paid to do does not mean you get a tip.

I tip my valets, bell boys and anybody that brings anything to my room, room service, ice, whatever at our hotels during the season. I tip severs at restaurants as well. Only people in my day to day interaction I don't tip, are my Uber/Lyft drivers. Don't know why. It feels different for some reason. No real reasoning behind it.

Tipping is a pretty American concept. Most places in the world don't require tips. Its more of a leave the change if you feel like it.

we rarely tip in NZ. minimum wage isnt bad here so there is no sense of overwhelming exploitation to try counteract.

some restaurants, if you are paying by card, will have a 'tip - yes/no' option on the machine - but 80% of the time the person cashing you up just presses no before even handing you the terminal.

i dont think id ever tip an uber driver either. I did give a driver a $50 tip in cash on NYE for like an $8 fare, but hey, i was drunk and its NYE....

i would find it hard not to tip cute a cute waitress in the USA tho.....

JUST DROVE JONAS VALENCIUNAS. He invited me to hang with him, Joakim Noah, and Chandler Parsons. I passed but that was pretty cool.
