You will all make it. One of my best friends moved to the most Northern city in Sweden, Kiruna, about a 100 kilometers from the Arctic circle. He works at a dog sled company & cooks for them and guests.. They offer night rides (little choice) towards the Northern lights. auroraa-borealis.jpg.gif

I retired in 016, worked four months later at Mannheim Auto auctions for awhile. I kept my licenses valid and work two days a week in a small borough providing Housing, Fire and Building inspections. I really like the job and people I work with and for.

I work with two guys who moved here from Colorado and one of them this is his first winter here, they are greatly entertained by how much people are talking about our "snowstorm".

I remember back to back ice storms when I was a kid in NE Portland. Two years in a row we got nailed. First year was the worst. My parents had this big old house that had a huge fire place, lost power for a week. Set up the camping gear in the living room and had 3 of our elderly neighbors over camping out with us. One lady my dad had to cut out of her house with a hand saw. A huge tree crashed onto her house, blocked both doors. It's the mix of snow, rain, and ice of this storm that has me concerned.

Doesn't matter if you're from Colorado or Antarctica, if you got not power in your home it's a bitch.

I'll never forget how quiet everything was and then you would suddenly hear a tree give away because of all the ice. Just a huge crashing sound and then silence again.

Those were on January 17, 1979 and January 17, 1980. One year to the day apart. I was working out in Gresham (almost to Troutdale) and it was brutal. My boss lived in Milwaukie and made almost $200 towing people out of ditches and snowbanks with his 4 wheel drive on the way into work. Snow is a nuisance but ice storms are seriously fucked.

Ice storms are pretty universally bad. It's about what you're used too though. When I lived in Canada a foot or two of snow was basically nothing to really care about, people pretty much just did their normal stuff. Here a couple of inches of snow and it shuts down the city.
Never been to a place that handles ice storms well though.
Also, I don't think either of them is entertained by people without power, they're entertained by how big of a deal is being made of a chance for a couple inches of snow.

Just went and filled up the propane tank just in case we lose power. As long as I can cook on the BBQ I'm fine.

As long as I have my gas fireplace and gas hot water heater I’m good to go!

It'll suck to not have power for us. Definitely, something we rely on a lot.

don't know why but its soooo annoying when people from outside of Portland thinks its hilarious to make fun of Portland snow. I go to Denver all the time. its flat as you can get. no hills. snow plows and sand and salt etc all night long. Same with Minnesota where I have friends. The roads are clear. There isn't a hill for hundreds of miles. Its different. I live on top of a hill or whatever that's about 800 feet up. When we have snow the turns to ice, driving down the road to town is mayhem until its cleared.
