I agree that he should've been in the crypt and that he's basically worthless as a fighter but I don't get why people were surprised that he went out there after he said he was going to.

Then again I also don't believe that not a single person in the show thought about the crypt being a bad place to hide out.

I have been reading a lot of posts on Reddit that make Jon's battle plan look like a joke.

Charge your light cavalry directly into an unknown enemy at the start.

Post your soldiers BEHIND your long range artillery.

Put your soldiers IN FRONT of your trench and spikes.

Only fired one volley from the trebuchets. And man that castle is a dump. Short walls, no mote, and not really on any kind of defensible position like a hill. Apparently the Winterfell in the books was MUCH more imposing. It has been a while since I read the books though.

Yeah, and Tyrion won the Battle of Blackwater and he wanted to be in the fight and ended up in the crypt.

It wasn't "why" as in how he managed to talk himself into getting a bunch of fighters to red-shirt themselves trying to save him. It's why did they let him talk them into it because his value as a fighter is actually negative ... he's like having another guy on the other side.

Tyrion should have planned this battle. Or at least the book version of Tyrion should have planned this battle. Not the neutered shell of a man that the show runners have made him.

To be fair, Jon leads with his heart, not his head. His battle techniques aren't sound, and emotion usually gets in the way at some point, too.

He's the type of commander who would inspire so much loyalty that his troops would get killed to a man by shaky planning.

Why are you running calvary into the dark? You have the trebuchets, but the dragons could also light the field and parts of the white walker army before the battle, as well.

In this situation though they needed as many "soldiers" as possible. Plus Sam did nut up before and take one down. He shit his pants when the battle started though.

    3 opinions-

The Battle plan was a joke, but then again it’s a TV SHOW.

A couple of the Dragon scenes flying around above the battle seemed pointless.

I think I wanted Jorah to live the most out of everyone so that sucked.

    Tyrion ....

Again, it's shaky leadership. Whatever he wanted, his value wasn't on the battlefield and his commanders should have known that.

We're getting into details, though. We could pick apart tiny things all over the place if we wanted to.

Apparently from what I have been reading, the actual plan was to hide the dragons until the NK showed himself, but Dani went off book and started torching some fools because she saw her beloved troops getting slaughtered. That's why they flew up onto that hill away from the battle.

As death's go, Jorah got a great one. It was in perfect resonance with his character. It's how he'd have wanted to go out.

The Mormonts both died extremely well. Wonder who gets Bear Island now.

Well Jon isn't a general though and doesn't have a lot of experience with this. The two big battles he had previously been a part of weren't really the traditional type.

That being said I didn't get why the Dothraki soldiers charged into the darkness like that. It's almost like the show just wanted it to look cool and ignored common sense.

That's accurate. The plan to send the Dothraki riding off to attack an established enemy in the dark, though, was utter foolishness to start with. You'd think none of these people heard of "The Charge of the Light Brigade."

Well Jon’s already got the Sword from House Mormont, might as well give him the island.

Did these fuckers never watch the 300???? Your numbers don't matter if you can funnel them into a small area. I still think trying to fight them at the castle was a mistake. They should have just picked a spot to fight where their numbers were an advantage.

Also..... has nobody ever heard of pikes?

Jorah's death was fitting but super predictable. A lot of the appeal of the show was that it was super unpredictable but ever since they surpassed the books it's become too normal.

No Karstarks or Umbers, either. The future of the North looks pretty Stark.

But if everything is unpredictable, it becomes too predictable.

They could have just had him ride off into the dark in that Dothraki charge and only show back up attacking Dany after the Night King had reanimated the recent dead. Now THAT would have been unpredictable.

It just struck me as though they didn't put any thought into anything.

Using the crypt as a last resort safe spot is fine...... but why not burn the bodies down there first? They know he can reanimate the dead.

Tyrion is supposed to be a big brain strategist. I don't understand why he wasn't leading the fight. He successfully held Kings Landing against superior numbers. Jon is a horrible general.
