No. When you're paying a billion plus for a new toy you don't care if the coach and GM are under contracts.

    for sure

how much are the two extensions worth anyway? Probably no more than 15M. That's less than 1 year of Turner's contract. A prospective buyer won't bat an eye at that amount when he's arranging a 1.3B transaction. I mean, $1,281,000,000 is OK but $1,295,000,000 is a deal killer?

What is the incentive for Jody to give out deals now if she's just gonna sell the team?

to reward guys she thinks are doing a good job?

it's entirely possible she felt that was justified while believing it would have no bearing on a sale

    Hello darkness, my old friend
You can't necessarily just sell a team instantly on a whim. Even if she right this instant wants to sell the team, it could be a year or two process. Why wouldn't she want team stability in the meantime, considering there's very little downside? Contracts for Stotts and Olshey aren't going to quash a sale.

And if she hasn't yet decided to sell, she's just considering it, all the more reason if she likes the jobs Stotts and Olshey are doing.

Doesn't the RG lease end in 2025?

    1. The team is not moving.

    2. The lease means shit. It was a $40 million penalty if the team moved. If someone can afford $1 billion + to buy the team they can pay the $40 mill.

Blazers own the Moda. No lease on that. There is an agreement with the city but like I said above, it no longer means a thing.

according to what I'm reading right now, the Blazers do not own the Moda Center. The Rose Quarter, including the Moda, and the Blazers (and Seahawks) are all owned by Vulcan Sports & Entertainment. They are different entities

The Blazers are the primary tenant of the Moda Center with a lease that expires in 2025. The Winterhawks are a secondary tenant.

when financing was being lined up for the construction of the Moda and renovation of the Rose Quarter in 1993, Allen signed an exclusive site agreement with the city requiring the Trail Blazers to play all home games in Portland for 30 years. That agreement expires in 2023

At the beginning of next season, the Moda will be the 9th oldest arena in the NBA. So, even with good intentions on the part of JA or a new owner there is the possibility for some friction to develop in the next 4-5 years. That doesn't mean the Blazers will move though

one thing it could mean is that negotiations for selling the team might get hung up because the team doesn't own the arena. I'd imagine VSE would be willing to sell both, but a new owner might not want any long-term commitment to an older arena, especially one he'd have to pay up front for. And I might be talking out of my ass because I've never spent a billion dollars at one time

    A couple of things.

The Moda has had substantial renovations over the years and is excellently maintained. It is not fair to compare it to an almost 30 year old arena.

Blazers and Moda are owned by Vulcan, Jody Allen now owns Vulcan.

The exclusive site agreement really doesn't mean shit anymore. 1. The buyout is $40 million. Which is hardly anything for the amounts of money we're talking about to purchase team and arena. 2. I used to know someone in the mayor's office. The amount of money it would require to defend the site agreement isn't worth it anymore. The city doesn't have on staff the same caliber of attorneys Vulcan/AKA Jody Allen would bring to court and they would have to hire outside representation. The city is not interested in suing and losing. There would be a settlement and it would be for pretty cheap. But that's only if the Blazers wanted to sue to break the site agreement. Which they don't. The team isn't moving and the NBA wouldn't allow it to. The NBA wants to stay and expand back into the NW.

don't get me wrong Sly....I don't believe the Blazers will move. And I noted in my post that VSE owns the Blazers, the Rose Quarter, and the Moda (and Seahawks)

I would also anticipate that the Moda can be fine as an arena for another decade or two. But I do see there could be some friction with the lease and site agreement expiring. That's a few years away and if JA sells the team though

as for Jody Allen owning Vulcan, that's probably true but I don't know what kind of will or trust agreements PA had. I would assume she has majority control but I don't know for sure.

Moda needs a new screen/scoreboard. That thing is tiny compared to the new ones they have in some other arenas.

In all fairness to our arena, it is in AMAZING shape and up to date compared to the majority of arenas around the league. There are some DUMPS, regardless of age.

The biggest reason the Moda is still nice is because they keep all those Blazer broadcast guys in a trailer in the parking lot.
