White people collectively went CRAZY at the thought of that: Rumors of Idris Elba as James Bond prompts racist outrage After much speculation, Daniel Craig signed up for his fifth go-round as James Bond earlier this year, announcing that he’d be teaming with Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting) on a sequel set to debut in theaters in November 2019. Despite Craig’s return, however, speculation has been rampant about who will subsequently assume the 007 mantle, with fans diligently petitioning series producers to make a bold choice by selecting Idris Elba as the next incarnation of the iconic British spy. This week a new report indicated that such casting may actually take place — and the response on Twitter has been especially pointed. As one might expect, many have reacted to this news with less-than-tolerant online comments, given that Elba is black and Bond has historically been white. Rather than simply engaging with those trolls, though, more than a few fans have used this potential casting news to joke about the racist treatment an Elba Bond might actually face — all as a way to both turn the tables on those who might object to his participation because of his skin color and to simultaneously address heated issues that remain front and center in contemporary society.
Frankly, I don't want the retreads. Give me my own heroes. White folk would go CRAZY if Superman was black. Even though that incarnation would be MUCH more powerful than a white Superman.
Im not sure I understand how superman would be more or less powerful as white or black or brown or whatever? Or are you saying the character would have more “power” or influence in reality?
Same reason a black car seat gets hotter than a white one. Black superman would absorb more energy from the sun. barfo
Have you seen Luther? I need to go check if there are any more episodes released now that I think about it.
Easy. Where does Superman's powers come from? The Yellow sun. Would a black man be able to absorb more or less energy from the sun?
I got it, I kind of answered that above. I know basically nothing about superhero movies / comics. I have seen the incredibles because of my kids.
This is all conjecture. You are going to have to prove that black superman wouldn't be weaker, especially at night. What if Superman's power limit is like a battery. 100 percent is 100 percent. His skin isn't what makes him strong. The skin is the barrier the radiation has to pass through. At night more radiation would leak out because of the dark skin. So maybe from dawn until 10am black superman is more powerful. After 10am white superman has caught up and at night white superman has the advantage from maybe midnight until dawn. WHITE SUPERMAN WINS AGAIN
My daughter is a linguist, literally. I asked her about this and she said that while the word does not have racial origins, she would never use it. "It has racist overtones today," she said. That is not being "overly sensitive." Apparently there are two schools of thought - it's sort of constitutional really. Originalists and transformative. Transformatives believe that word uses and meanings change over time and the word we were discussing would fall into that group. Originalists look at the root and case closed. Most of us are transformatives. "Cool" for instance doesn't mean what it did in the 1700s. We don't speak in Olde English anymore. Language changes and evolves. (That said, "literally" does mean literally, even if most bozos use it figuratively! Triggers! )
Knew you'd say that and that's what I wanted..... Superman's powers would then have to be a result of a cumulative effect of the radiation.. I could see it if you said 13 year old black superman would be stronger than an otherwise equal 13 year old white superman. Once they've reached adulthood all bets are off. If the white Kryptonian would be stronger on their home planet then logically he would be here. Now that I've finally won this ages old debate you should go watch Luther.
Completely wrong. When superman is in the radiation of a red sun he has NO powers... Also like in most depictions, Superman's powers are dependent on the light of a yellow sun, and he loses his powers when exposed to light from a red sun. Stracyznski expandes on this in the Earth One continuity; Tyrell (a native from another planet in Krypton's solar system) claims that exposure to blue dwarfs or quazars would make himself and Superman godlike beings while proximity to a black hole would be fatal
Next time the guys at work call me a nerd Im pointing to this thread... By then we might even know if Marazul got banned today...
Ha! I was just making shit up but if you actually read that there are different eras with different stories. In some of them I'd actually be right most likely.
