You think the Portland Thorns is anywhere near the level of excitement of the Timbers? That's just the stadium capacity. Talking about public watch parties and total reach. When the Thorns were in their final, were there huge watch parties at the Crystal Ballroom, etc? You wear a Timbers jersey at Alaska Airlines, you get to board first. I mean rah rah women, but to think they are anywhere near the same level as men is ridiculous.
This is the last Men's World Cup Champions Celebration: This is the Women's Celebration, most "fans" didn't even bother to stand up:
I would like to see women get more but in interest, as shown by average attendance, men's soccer gets almost four times as many fans nationwide as women. Portland is the exception at 18K vs 21K. I'm going to have to concede to you.
I think women should get the same share of revenue that men do, thats my issue. Men in basketball and soccer AFAIK get a much bigger chunk of the money that they bring in then the women.
Never heard of the Portland Thorns. Seriously. Nothing American about the US women’s team, and they should maybe play under a different name as most Americans find them rude, arrogant, self-absorbed, unsportsmanlike, anti-American and actively hateful towards any Americans who exercise Freedom of speech. Their disgusting dragging and walking on the flag will be the image that defines them forever.
Yeah! America should be for old white men only, right? All the rest of you, get off Maris's lawn! barfo
The take is that everyone cares about the MEN'S World Cup. If the US Mens team made it into the World Cup at all, their first match would probably have more people watching than the Women's Final. The US doesn't give a shit about soccer versus the rest of the world. Women's soccer is even worse in terms on interest. Add to that the team has a bunch of politicizing players on it and stepped on the flag after celebrating the win.
I favor improved benefits but not necessarily improved pay due to the difference in revenue generated. Portland is something of an exception.
I think you're wrong about the U.S. not caring a whit about soccer. I've seen the interest grow from the days when you would have been right to a much greater interest today.
The entire purse for the 2019 women's world cup was 30 million. The entire purse for the 2019 men's world cup was 400 million. Men's and Womens world cups are held at different times. Theres an argument to be made that if the women were given the same platform/promotions as the men. That they'd generate more revenue. Would it equal the difference? Who knows. But there is also an argument to be made that women need to show their sport is promotable . That they can generate fans, tv deals, and money. Right now they can't. One solution is to hold both world cups at the same time. The solution is not to just hand the soccer athletes tax dollars. Oh and iirc these women are salary employees. The men only make money if they do anything. Also iirc women get a larger potion of the pie in NWSL than the Men do. IIRC Thorns are an exception to the rule that NWSL can't sell tickets. Oregon is weird like that.
Well, it's kind of like the Olympics. People only give a shit every 4 years. And most of those people are posers.
Maybe it's just living in Soccer City U.S.A. but it seems like the sport is exploding. I see the kids in the high school across the street from me practicing every day on the football field. I see where every high school has a soccer team. When I was a kid, before electricity, I remember playing soccer on our athletic field back in the 50s for crying out loud. Okay, I went to a school where the kids came from wealthy homes, but still it was a harbinger. I'm not trying to say that MLS is big like MLB or the NFL or the NBA but it definitely is on the rise and pretty popular.
Slow boring day for you guys, eh? I mean, this is some bottom of the barrel, low hanging fruit, lazy trolling. You two need to up your games. You’re men after all. Doesn't that make you better at everything????? The dog days of summer really suck around here......
Just being realistic here. The men's world cup is the main event. The big money maker. Where iconic stars who will be remembered for generations make their mark.
