capitalism is great and can be affected either negatively or positively by consumers/customers. Where else can a young person earn the kind of money that pro athletes do here in USA.
They wouldn't get paid unless there was a market for it and a machine (like NBA) that drives it to the consumer, you guys and I.
Consumer are smarter these days than ever before because of the internet information readily available and competition. Im sure most in here pay for an internet connection and/or even pay for cable or dish. Im one of them, and I know every month I pay my bill its mainly entertainmnet dollars spent and I realize that somewhere stock holders or sole owners are making a bundle, but thats cool as long as I feel I'm getting some value out of my cost. I don't purchase foo foo coffees like 95% of younger people that spend $50/$75 a month on, as its my choice but its also their choice. Think of the money that the founder of starbucks and others are making because of the free choice in consumerism. Plus it creates jobs, so you can spend more on coffee or whatever extravagant purchase you want.
You think Lanny would want to move from Lake O to Lents? his choice

Capitalism is indeed great, but we are talking about a government program here, not the free market.

There's the legitimately needy, and then there's the wanty. I'm not in favor of free handouts for the lazy......irrespective of skin color.

Pretty sure the 1%'ers profiting from this administration qualify as the wanty rather than the needy.... irrespective of their skin color, which is almost uniformly white.

They also have the wherewithal, savvy, etc. to amass this wealth, create more jobs, and the like. Shoot, barfo, even YOU have that same opportunity! You tell me what would be stopping you.

Who says anything is stopping him? Profit isn't the end all, be all of a healthy society...Trump now wants to take away public assistance from the poor who are holding green cards...he's not hurting the poor parents as much as the children...today he's gutting wildlife protection...something China did under Mao that let them turn the entire country into a desert and their watersheds into mud....there are almost no birds to be found anymore in urban China.....they've eaten them all. It does open the doors for mega developers to do land grabs....Trump's new BLM chief wants to start selling off BLM land.....I hope a mountain lion moves into his backyard...we're supposed to live in harmony with the land here, not dominate it and escalate the price of real estate.....we don't need more golf courses in my view...prepare yourself to live in a country without Nat'l parks to enjoy...better visit Yellowstone before it's a parking lot.....I want the govt to update the power grid, not ruin the land

Nothing is stopping me, and I'm not asking the federal government for a handout. Why are you in favor of welfare for the wanty rich?

Strangely the only folks I see in Eugene looking for handouts are white, mostly middle aged men....overwhelmingly so....they also have grocery carts and more often than not...an expensive, well fed dog

There are poor that need assurance, there are those that just want to milk the system that are capable & there are rich that are always looking to get richer.
Government assistance programs are ok as long as they are managed and measured properly. Good lord over the course of time many government programs have been mis managed and not accountable, regardless of party in control. Big massive centralized programs must be efficient, effective and accountable.

The govt spends a fortune on military research...often billions to experiment on a plane that never flies....the military is a perfect example of mismanaged money....you know why we leave tanks and trucks and jeeps in countries we leave? So they can buy more from defense contractors.....people spend a huge fortune in this country on entertainment. Those same people aren't stressed financially by public assistance for poor people or victims of circumstance.....you taking the welfare away from victims of Hurricane Katrina who lost homes? Factory workers who's jobs moved? Public assistance is sustainable in this society...it's all a matter of your value system. Unfortunately it looks to me like the Trump camp wants to price poorer people out of the country. Wants to gentrify America and payoff hookers while banking in Germany...sheesh. I'm completely disgusted at the culture Trump has brought to the capital. You want a useless wall at the price of a hungry child or a kid needing a kidney? One thing for sure....after Trump we DO need to make America great again...

Sales tax works ….you consume you kick in to the kitty....Taiwan funded their national healthcare system with a 6% sales tax across the board....if you work there for the first six months on a work permit you pay 26 percent income tax and it drops back to 6% if you live and work there more than half of every fiscal year. Oregon is losing a fortune with no sales tax and if you don't own property, smoke, drink or gamble you basically don't pay much tax on anything else...well...gas has a tax

I agree in thats its about values and be belief system along with a solid plan of action. I agree the government both state and fed have a lot a room to improve on accountability and fiscal responsibility. I shared on here one time about the State of Oregon Emergency Services division in Salem stockpiling generator sets because they need to use their current fiscal year budget so they would get an increase for the next.
See, I think that is like stealing when the funds could have been used elsewhere. The problem is bureaucracy so big and everyone wanting to justify their existence for employment it breeds inefficiency and bad management with zero accountability. You could run a private company that way or it would doomed from the start.
Im a firm believer in helping those in need and I do support non profit kids hospitals and veteran non profits.

It's odd that people believe that private companies are somehow more efficient and more accountable and better managed than government. It isn't true, when companies get big they have the same issues.
