‘Free Hong Kong’ signs and chants get fans kicked out of NBA game — in Philadelphia

A married couple said they were kicked out of Tuesday’s exhibition game between the 76ers and the Guangzhou Loong-Lions of the Chinese Basketball Association in Philadelphia for displaying signs that read “Free Hong Kong” and “Free HK” and then shouting the former slogan after security officers took their signs away.

Sam Wachs, a Philadelphia resident who said he lived in Hong Kong for two years, told NBC 10 that Wells Fargo Center security officers first confiscated their signs and then kicked him out along with his wife after they yelled “Free Hong Kong” in the second quarter.

“We were just sitting in our seats near the Chinese bench,” Wachs said.

“We were saying, ‘Free Hong Kong,’ " Wachs continued. “What’s wrong with that?”

In a statement to The Post, the 76ers said a number of fans had complained about the two fans’ “continuing disruption.”

Political signs should be banned at sporting events. It'll get too distracting.

Elmer Layden started the whole singing the national anthem at football games after it was ordered in 1931. Up until then they sang it a few times at baseball games but the whole patriotism through sports seems a bit forced to me.

It’s actually pretty sad the NBA is pandering to a large market for money by trying to hush up people who speak out against atrocities. China is a straight up authoritarian state and has zero credibility in human rights.

I don’t think I’ll purchase League Pass this year. I will happily stream all the games illegally. The NBA can make up their money in China.

There are reports stating that a severe drop in the salary cap is not out of the question.

The Dame/CJ extensions might absolutely destroy our flexibility if the cap doesn't increase or drops. If this China thing has a massive effect on the cap, I would hope for a provision in the CBA to allow for some leeway here.

If the cap drops for next season, wouldn't that decrease the value of Dame's extension?

I went to a Blazers game in SLC, sporting a Blazers jersey. There were several jazz fans causing a “continuing disruption.” Security
did not kick them out of the game or even consider it - nor should they have. Coming onto the court is a disruption. Chanting "Free HK"
    is not.
