What if DeRozan has told the Spurs he doesn't want to re-up with them? What if we told him he could help pick our next coach? Would a CJ for DeRozan trade make sense?

Ha, that’s some desperation. Demar Derozen gets to help pick the coach?

@tester551 What about something like this to duck the tax for the Blazers:

    Tax Evasion Trade.PNG
Grizzlies don't get a 1st for Iggy but they get a high 2nd and a couple of young players on rookie deals.

Mavericks add Iggy for an expiring, 2nd, and taking on Felicio's contract next year. They would still be under the tax despite taking on the extra salary.

Bulls take on $8.6 million in salary this year in exchange for trimming about $36 million next year and pick up a future 2nd.

Blazers go from being $13.7 million over the tax to $5.3 million UNDER the tax!!! With two open roster spots that's enough money to sign or trade for two players up to $5.3 million and still be under the tax. This trade would also generate an over $19 million trade exception that they'd have a year to use. Just an example but say at the draft Minnesota wants our pick for Robert Covington then we'd be able to make that trade without having to match salary.

Now unless Porter and Nurk come back healthy this season or Portland pulls off some sort of miracle signing/trade with the extra roster spots they would use, this would most likely result in not making a run at the playoffs this year. Sure, I get that it seems like they'd be wasting a year of Dame's prime but best case scenario it seems unlikely to turn this season completely around anyway. Next year run it back with Dame, CJ, Simons, Trent, Hood?, Little, Hezonja?, Porter, Collins, Nurk, Skal?, Lotto Pick (we're only 2 games out of 5th), Full-MLE, Bi-Annual Exception, and/or using part or all of the huge Trade Exception. The cap situation moving forward would be much more manageable.

The only question is if this is enough for all teams involved to make a move like this work and is it something the Blazers should consider?

Any trade that sacrifices the future in an attempt to salvage this season should be a non-starter!

I like it. Memphis would have issues with roster spots, but that could be overcome.

Not sure they'd give up Barnes.
Also if Portland was trading both Whiteside & Baze while taking back longer salary, I'd hope that they'd be able to cut more $ off the cap this year

Yeah, lower end to minimum salary players could be mixed around to accommodate that. Portland could even take on one or two unwanted players from teams involved as long as they were a combined under $5.3 million.

Mike Richman podcast from a couple days ago. His “informed opinion” is the blazers are “desperately” trying to do something trade wise. He also goes on a little rant about how horrific the team is rebounding the ball with Whiteside off the court and wonders why the team hasn’t signed anyone to a ten day after the Skal injury. He’s of the opinion that it’s financially motivated, because no other explanation makes sense. Can’t say I disagree, but maybe they need the roster spot for a 2-1 trade and don’t think a ten day guy is gonna make a big enough difference in the meantime.

Barnes wouldn't blow anyone's skirt up but he would fit the system.

Haynes said they’ll make a move too, and he’s much more plugged into the blazers than Windhorst.

Honestly I would do that deal. probably also add a few 2nd pick if needed Think about it. It would help most of our issues. We would get dedmon to be a solid back up to nurk. Barnes would be a great fit in a dame, cj, Collins, and nurk lineup. Just think harkless defense with a real threat offense. And yogi would be the solid back up point guard we need off the bench. Also one other thing, while Barnes contract is expensive at $24 million, it actually go down $2 million for each other for rest of the contract. Which mean in his final year would be $18 million. Now that money is a lot cheaper than what Kent is getting nowadays.
    Dame/yogi
    CJ/Simons
    Barnes/Hood
    Collins/skal
    Nurk/ dedmon
Now that's a starting lineup is very solid. And with a bench that should be able to score a lot more than it currently has

    From John Hollinger, The Athletic

Robert Covington, Minnesota – Minnesota isn’t just going to trade Covington for the hell of it. He’s too good, a two-way, two-position forward who spaces the floor and doesn’t need the ball. Every team in the league can use this guy. The other key selling point is his contract, which pays an average of $12.5 million a year for the two seasons after this one. Thus, giving up an asset for Covington isn’t just a rental, he can be a key piece of a good team for a couple of years of a title-chase window.

The question is, what would the T’wolves want for him? Do they only see him in the context of a deal for somebody else’s star player, or are they willing to move him for pure assets and gamble on rebuilding more deeply around Karl-Anthony Towns? Certainly, Covington’s name has been out there, but the context in which Minnesota would greenlight a deal remains squishy.

While we’re here — everyone is putting together scenarios with contenders for Covington, but what about non-contenders? Given his contract, any team looking at a two-year window after this one should be kicking the tires. For instance, shouldn’t Portland look at RoCo as a potential starting 4 next year? Would the Wolves look at the talented but raw Anfernee Simons as fair compensation?

Kevin Love, Cleveland – I’m cheating here since I don’t think he makes sense for most teams. But I do see one fairly realistic deal: Love, Ante Zizic and John Henson to Portland for Hassan Whiteside, Kent Bazemore and a top-20 protected 2021 first. It lets Cleveland get out of the Love deal while selling the fact the Cavs got an asset for it, and allows Portland to move on from a season that’s circling the drain and start working on the next one. Portland’s next-best option with its expiring contracts would be to parlay them into mid-teens cap space, which maybe gets them a shot at Bogdan Bogdanovic or somebody of his ilk. Locking Love into the Lillard-McCollum-Nurkic prime years seems the better option.

That locks us into that lineup for 3 years, and its not even close to being good enough to win a championship.
