The Blazers have already made one more although there is speculation Ariza might be moved again in the coming 2 weeks. Nurkic will be back at some point and Collins is said to be 'ahead of schedule' in his rehab. So what does that mean for the Blazers, the remaining large ending contract (Whiteside) and what Portland is going to do in the next coupld of weeks?
There is no way Hassan resigns for next year. Why would he? Plenty of teams should want his expiring to take them deeper in the playoffs.
Unfortunately, we already know the answer... Whiteside for salary dump at most, but probably nothing... Neil will never take a risk. Purgatory still sells tickets in Portland.
Who is speculating that Ariza gets moved again? I think that it would be smart to move Ariza again... but I haven't heard much discussion regarding that. Also, I'm not sure he has much value either. I highly doubt Boston would do that. It also complicates things for the Blazers, as Hayward makes $5m more than Whiteside is is likely out for the rest of the year.
Boston seems to be getting good production at center though. I had Boston as a possible destination for Whiteside as well but looking at some numbers makes it unlikely imo. They’re a top 5 team in points given up in the paint, top 10 in offensive boards, and top 10 in blocks. I mean if they’re desperate to dump Hayward’s money, it’s possible, but I doubt it. He’s been productive, and may opt out this summer.
Kanter's been great for them of late, but they still need a C, and Hayward is on the hook for 34 mil next season (no way he opts out of that). Hell, I think Boston would probably need to throw a pick our way to take on that Hayward contract and 15% trade kicker. It's a really expensive proposition for us, but a risk I would prolly take. He really fits all our needs at SF if Nurk can come back healthy next season.
Why wouldn’t Hayward opt out? This summers FA class sucks while the 2021 class is loaded, specifically at his position.
He’d get a lot more than $34M on the market. Horford opted out of $30M and got $100M, and he was much older than Hayward.
I don't know what incentive they would have to do that. They aren't a tax team this season so the savings are irrelevant. It's very unlike Ainge to add picks unless it looks like he's "winning" the deal. Also, they're trying to win, and Hayward is undoubtably the better player...
I came up with one option that I think would work great for everyone involved. It would have to be completed in 2 steps to get through the CBA. Portland/Memphis: Ariza ($12.2m) + Cash <-> Josh Jackson ($7.5m) Memphis/Dallas: Ariza ($12.2m) <-> Lee ($12.7m) + future 2nd Dallas gets a 'wing defender' that they are looking for at the cost of a future 2nd. Memphis gets cash to cover the salary difference & a future 2nd for someone they have not played at all. Portland reduces the cap hit by ~$5m and gets to within $2m of the tax line. They take a chance on Jackson to be a model citizen and to be the SFotF.
I truly don’t believe they acquired Ariza with the idea of flipping him before the deadline. They acquired him because not only does he fill a basketball need while lowering the tax bill, his contract also gives the team flexibility in the summer/next season.
That's not happening. He hasn't played a single game for the Grizzlies who have assigned him to the G-League since the beginning of the year. Hell, he just got suspended for a game in the G-LEAGUE for behavior reasons.
I think they stand Pat if they do a trade it will be like getting rid of Mario for something but I still think this it is for trades. Olshey doesn't more then one trade at deadlines.
Not sure what effect he had, but the Utah Jazz are 12-1 since they acquired Jordan Clarkson. Before he arrived, they were 18-12....now up to 30-13 and tied for the #2 spot in the West.
I know better than to click on a "Trade Thread". You guys start to act like NBA players are a box of steak knives at a flea market that you can find a good deal for and trade for a new lamp. You need the lamp because you can't see what you are cutting with the knives but when you trade the knives you can't cut what you see. I don't remember reading anyone saying lets trade Baze and Tolliver for Ariza, Gabriel, and Biggie. Anyway..... Have at it.
