Only two real questions with a Carroll trade: 1. Will Jody be OK with undoing the tax savings from the Baze-Ariza swap? 2. Will the Spurs actually make an in-season trade for the first time, that too with a team they're competing with for the 8th seed? They're petty enough to not do it, even with a guy who isn't playing for them. Add a third: 3. Can we toss Mario in there so we don't have to open up a roster spot?
Just cause they are asking for 2 firsts doesn't mean that's what it will take to get him. No way would I give up 2 firsts and doubt another team would as well. Dumpster dive finds are great if they work out, but often times they don't also.
If someone is willing to absorb Carroll they’d be stupid not to. That report didn’t come out for no reason.
The risk with someone like Carroll is essentially nonexistent. We need him to play 15-20 mpg and hit some shots and play some defense-- it's not a big ask. Ariza and Melo both playing 35 mpg like they have been is not sustainable.
So, what kind of a deal are you going to work with the Spurs? Carroll's $7M contract is a good fit with the Bazemore TPE, but I don't see Neil being willing to pay the tax on that much money. We'd have to include 2-3 of our young guys in order to fit salary matching requirements. After you get past Hezonja and Swanigan, I have a hard time coming up with another piece that I'd be willing to part with for a whole bunch of meh like Carroll.
Carroll is just a little younger than Ariza so it's not like he has any upside left and if Pops can't get anything out of him why should we expect more. Maybe the guy has just lost his game.
Carroll is probably the prototypical guy you’d get for a TPE as teams aren’t looking to just dump solid players without a return, and $7M isn’t exactly an albatross. San Antonio takes on Mario and gives up a second. I think that’s fair.
Yeah, but there's a difference between tweaking the end of the bench and trading Ariza or Whiteside which is what 90% of this thread seems to be about. Just my opinion but I think we should hold on to both.
RealGM Trade Checker allows the above trade to go through. (can't use the TPE with a player) ESPN's Trade Machine says it doesn't work. Which is correct?
Yeah I don’t wanna trade Ariza either. If Whiteside wants to stay I’d probably keep him as well and take a shot at re-signing him. A sign and trade would still be an option as well so it’s not a guarantee we’d lose him for nothing. Besides, I wouldn’t wanna just trade him to trade him. I’d want some value. Not sure that deal is out there right now.
tradenba allows it as well. Espn doesn’t take the TPE into consideration. I don’t know about the rest.
I don't think Hood can be traded without his approval since he should have Early Bird rights after this season and he has an option on next year.
Pop famously benched Richard Jefferson and he went on to win a title in CLE. He cut Bam Adebayo from the national team that desperately needed a big, and he became an all star months later. Pop has made mistakes before.
