I always ask my wife that question when our kids are misbehaving, prove she's mine! That doesn't work well for me usually heh.

My understanding is that a lot of the escalation of costs is because of larger administrative costs and lower research funds from the government. How it translates to making colleges more efficient is beyond me (and since I have a kid going to start college next year and another 3 years after that - it is certainly something that I face as the costs are pretty absurd).

It would do me good to do some research on this probably, but when I started college in 2003 I went for about 2 years before I got bored and dropped out. The costs were more than I could keep up with and I didn't want my parents to pay for it or for me to go in debt with it. Sure you've all heard the story, I got really addicted to alcohol and women and left my education there till about 2012. Then when I got married and had kids a couple of years later the options were going back to college which was already a mostly negative experience for me, or self education. I realized I could learn what I wanted to much easier and faster by myself, and in small groups of people doing the same thing. I was gifted a huge blessing that my boss wanted me to learn software and was a good friend with a AI professor at MIT who tutored me for 5-10 hours a week for about a year on software engineering / development, one of the nicest guys I have ever met. Anyways this is long winded, but I discovered a lot of stuff through the experience. A) Once I really decided I had to educate myself it is possible to do that without college. B) Colleges do a good job at filling in gaps though. For example, theres a lot of SW oriented algorithms and data structures that dont really come up much for self taught types, I had to really seek those out, the first and really basic one that comes to mind is bigO, which is as an software guy you’re aware of that im sure. C) I think our education system needs to be rethought. I was bored literally middle school through High School, then in college I was paying thousands to be bored some more, the classes werent tough but I had to take them to get the right credits I needed, it really jaded me on traditional education...

Anyways super long, my apologies. My personal opinion is education is a really big topic that should be discussed and we focus on the financial aspect because of college, but I know so many engineers who have similar stories to mine of just being so bored out of our minds in school, being forced to take classes simply because the school system says we have to even if they have nothing whatsoever to do with our degree’s. I value education, I literally take 8-10 courses a year since 2013ish through, Udemy, Coursera, EdX, udacity. So I see it as important but I think only half of the answer is make it free.

edit: Oh and yes I have worked with several engineers who are like 150k in debt and not very skilled coming out of college - Which is ok we all start somewhere but if their going to put someone that in debt they should at least have the basic skills they need...

Well, my opinion is that we used to have socialized education in the days when high-school education was what was required for most jobs (we still have that today, to the high-school level) - and no-one was yelling about communism. Unfortunately, the world has moved on and many jobs of the modern world require advanced education that is not covered at the high-school level, so the right thing to do (for the economy) - is to invest in this kind of education - if it is by fully covering college level education or a big increase in government funding of educational facilities via research grants as was done before - is really nothing more than going back to the days of the past - where the government invested in it's workforce by subsidizing education.

We need to move on though. Schooling should largely be done online, through electronic devices (it would cost a lot less to give every kid a laptop), even at young ages kids should be able to start learning at their own pace (within reason obviously, because some kids would just choose not too). We have technology at our disposal, we don't need to stuff kids into oversized classrooms, give them 8 hours a day of nothing, then send them home with tons of homework so they end up doing school for like 12 hours a day, with an education system that is obsessed with standardized testing and short term memorization. Sure certain children need independent help whether it's because of learning disabilities, or whatever the case is, and also yes some professions need hands-on experience, surgeons need to be able to pass rigid testing, pilots, high-risk jobs I get that. Revolutionizing our education system to the current century would be overall way more cost-effective and flat out better prepare kids for the real world. One of the reasons I'm homeschooling my kids is my wife's family did that and all of them were done and graduated with HS at the ages of 14-15, and well on their way to advanced education (a couple of them college, and the others to other routes). I realize that parents find that a nightmare because their kids have more time and the education system isn't their babysitting anymore, and I get that. I also understand social needs but there are plenty of ways to get social interaction if people seek it. I know there are issues with my ideas as well and it doesn't cover everything and every situation but covering up the fact our education system is pretty awful long before college-age isn't really going to help. Especially if like I said College isn't actually getting students the skills they need anyways. I've hired a few engineers straight from college and I can tell you their learning curve just to do basic stuff is immense, it's like 3-6 months before we even really expect anything useful out of them. I think the answer isn't going back to the past, it's understanding technology is an incredible tool for education.

Not a good look for Biden, but sorry Trump supporters, you lost the moral high grounds 4 years ago. These trump morons on twitter acting all outraged is truly some of the finest bit of hypocrisy I've ever seen (not surprised).

There is no coming back from this divide. Ever.

Funny, if a woman said she had three unplanned pregnancies she'd be called an irresponsible slut using legal abortion to get out of consequences. Man says he caused three unplanned pregnancies now wants others to have no choice.

Problem isn't ABM giving an opinion that he thinks abortion is wrong. He wants to change the law so every woman is forced to carry every pregnancy to term in every situation. And is supporting a vicious corrupt pathological liar proving he is unfit in a crisis, in order to force his will on women.

Still unforgivable. Men who force themselves on women know what they are doing. They want to cause pain.

PS The most pro life president ever just personally ordered the CDC to remove posters with information on how to prevent Corona virus from immigration courts. CDC had posters in several languages so immigrants would get the information. Trump would rather they all just die.

OMG, Biden told someone who seemed to be looking for a confrontation that they were "full of shit"?

Well, welcome to the United States of the Offended.

    Well,

I am having problems following your logic.

    You said:

Bernie supports helping many more get education. Trump just called for a cut of $5.6 billion in the department of education funding.

Maybe it is time to introduce your voting hand with your typing hand...

Unless you equate education efficiency with the kind of success Trump University had... you are just contradicting yourself.
