The Portland Buckaroos, the Portland Beavers, the Carnival and Hippopotamus restaurants. Goldberg’s Deli, The Speck, my grandparent’s house in the pre I-5 days (now the site of the Failing St. pedestrian overpass), Multnomah Kennel Club, Rose’s, Sylvia’s, Quality Pie, The (actual) Bomber.........man it sucks getting old.
The Metro on broadway. Current location of Columbia Sports. Sunken food court where everyone was smoking, eating really shitty food and reading willamette week. Being under 21 back then, it was like the only thing to do in downtown PDX. I loved that place. Truly quintessential old PDX Quest nightclub prior to being 21, Upfront FX after 21. Hung Far Low in NW PDX. Was moved to Division, might still be open, but nothing was cooler than Hung Far Low in NW. Shakers cafe in the Pearl. None of you will remember Shakers. Best Turkey Burger ever. I worked down there in the mid 90's. It was called the pearl but believe me, there was nothing pearl about it. Warehouses, gravel parking lots, and used rubbers. It was beautiful. Greek Cuisina
It was. Their fry sauce was actually, funny, groundbreaking (ketchup and mayo). It was the bomb back then.
Man. The stairwell up to the restaurant almost always had a drug addict or homeless person camping out. Then you walked into the neon lit awful restaurant, and in the corner of the restaurant was a dark cavern of goodness.
The Speck...In HS I pumped gas a Toms Gulf just kiddy corner. It was great all the chicks would come in to gas up and I would check their oil, air tires, etc. just to get aquatinted. Then there was the Pink Bucket close by too.
