How is saying there is white privilege divisive language? Is it negative towards whites? I dont think the steps to equality are pretend things dont exist and they go away. I think it's more the opposite of that, really

 

I'm not explaining myself in a way you are understanding.
I never said pretend things dont exist. I said take each incident on its own instead of painting a broad brush that all white have white privilege.

Again I provided a couple examples where I have been witness to Blacks not being disadvantaged and a white person being treated like a criminal based on his looks and dress alone.

The point i'm saying is whenever we make broad term statements and lump a bunch of people together, invariably someone in that group is going to feel disenfranchised and unfairly labeled, thus creating more conflict and diversity.

You want to bring people together stop saying these people over there and these people over here and start saying to everyone... this person here and this person there is....

Hopefully that makes a bit more sense.

 

Again, I never said it doesn't exist or isn't prevalent even, but to say to all the same for all white people is like saying all racism is all the same for all Black people and this just isn't true.

After all. What is a White man? A German? Italian? A Jew? Russian?

Did they all have the same privileges as each other in years past?

Is a White man a post migration man from Europe? Because some came over and was against slavery and some were. Does that mean that those who were against and never had slaves had the same benefit as those who did?

I'm saying its not all the same and a label saying its all the same, doesn't help.

White privilege absolutely exists but is not the same for everyone who is white and doesn't exist for all white humans...

To say otherwise would be turning a blind eye to the details of situations and just generalizing all people into one group unfairly.

 

Having white skin confers certain advantages in this society. "White privilege" doesn't mean all white people live "lives of privilege," which has its own meaning (a life with few/no financial worries), nor does it mean that in every circumstance, any white person will have a better outcome than any black or brown person. It means there are certain advantages that having white skin provides that can't be changed by other circumstances like wealth or education or prestigious job. All of the things in that list provide their own advantages potentially, but entirely separate from having white skin.

Having white skin on average confers better outcomes. Being male on average confers better outcomes. Being straight (or assumed straight, which is why some gay people aren't openly gay) on average confers better outcomes. All of these are forms of privilege. In this society, if you have any of those things, you have a born-in privilege. That doesn't mean you're guaranteed to be successful (however you define "success") or that someone without them is guaranteed to be unsuccessful.

A lot of the advantage you gain from these things are invisible if you have them. It seems like you're just taken at face value, no more, no less. That's the benefit. People of color, women, LGBT+ people often aren't just taken at face value, left blank until they fill the blanks in themselves. They come loaded with cultural preconceptions right from the start that the average white person doesn't. That can have trivial consequences (like an awkward social exchange) or huge ones (like subconsciously being less favored for a job or housing opportunity, or being taken for threatening when you're just jogging), but these consequences are consistent and unending throughout life. Simply not having those is a massive advantage.

 

But ALL white people DO have white privilege. Because they are white.

I was just at Home Depot. Man what a zoo! Very little social distancing going on as far as I could tell. About 50/50 on the mask as far as I could tell. I was surprised to see that the guy that retrieves the carts from the parking lot doesn't even wear gloves.

 

Gloves are useless if you don't change them anytime you touch something dirty
