Hours-long waits, problems with new voting machines and a lack of available ballots plagued voters in majority minority counties in Georgia on Tuesday — conditions the secretary of state called "unacceptable" and vowed to investigate.

Democrats and election watchers said voting issues in a state that has been plagued for years with similar problems, along with allegations of racial bias, didn't bode well for the November presidential election when Georgia could be in play.

"This seems to be happening throughout Atlanta and perhaps throughout the county. People have been in line since before 7:00 am this morning," Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Democrat, tweeted shortly after polls were supposed to open — and in some cases still hadn't.

Cody Cutting was on a long line at Lang Carson Community Center in Reynoldstown, Atlanta, where the line snaked around the block and some had been waiting to cast their votes for four and a half hours.

"People are a bit frustrated but spirits are still okay. Neighbors are bringing around food, water and chairs," he told NBC News.

Lengthy waits were reported in other parts of Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, said the problems "in certain precincts" in Fulton and DeKalb were "unacceptable."

"My office has opened an investigation to determine what these counties need to do to resolve these issues before November's election," he said in a statement.

Voting problems also plagued Fulton County in 2018, which led to charges of voter suppression by Democrats. The secretary of state at the time was Brian Kemp, a Republican, who wound up winning the governorship by a thin margin against Democrat Stacey Abrams. Abrams called the election "rotten and rigged."

Democrats have targeted Georgia — which has added 700,000 registered voters to the rolls since 2018 — as a possible swing state in November.

DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond blamed Raffensperger for the problems, and said he and his office should be investigated by the governor's office.

"It is the secretary of state's responsibility to train, prepare, and equip election staff throughout the state to ensure fair and equal access to the ballot box. Those Georgians who have been disenfranchised by the statewide chaos that has effected the voting system today in numerous DeKalb precincts and throughout the state of Georgia deserve answers," Thurmond said.

Kristen Clarke, president and CEO of the civil rights group Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law," called the election “a catastrophe. If we view the primary election as a dry run for November, then Georgia gets an F today."

She said her group has been flooded with calls from "voters who encountered barriers from polling sites that are not open on time, malfunctioning equipment, long lines with several hours' wait time, insufficient backup paper ballots and more.”

Three quarters of voters who called with problems mentioned their race was African-American, Clarke said.

This is how Kemp got elected governor of Georgia. Keep black and Latinx people and students from voting.

A week ago Iowa held its primary. Everything went right. No long lines, no gliches, votes counted that evening. Iowa had sent every active voter a vote by mail application and everyone who applied got a ballot. Postage paid.

It went so well the Republican controlled state legislature is moving to prevent vote by mail in future in Iowa. To keep people from voting.

The Republican party has budgeted $20 million and is working in every state to stop vote by mail.

Stacy Abrams was unable to vote by mail in Georgia although she applied a month ago.

A black journalist stood in line 3 hours, then drove to white suburbs. No lines.
Georgia "worked" just like it was supposed to.

I recall issues being cited before and after the election by Abrams and others...Kemp managed to sweep it under the rug

This is the only reason Kemp is governor of Georgia. Republicans cheat

It's interesting how many times the GOP (and the sheep who follow them) project the con of "voter fraud", when they're the ones who gerrymander districts, close voting locations in predominantly minority based areas, and do many things to try to intimidate minorities into not voting.

But it's ok, the Democrats created the KKK, Republicans passed the Civil Rights acts and it was the Republicans who freed the slaves. So it's obvious that the real racists who do things to subjugate minorities is the democrats, not the republicans.

this should come as no surprise to anyone.

stacking courts, gerry-mandering, and voter suppression have been the foundational offense of the GOP for decades and they really took it to the next level after the 2010 elections (when Obama blew it badly)

the cover they've used is "voter fraud' which of course they can't prove because it doesn't exist at any significant level. They know that higher voting turnout is bad news for them, and lower voting turnout is good news. Essentially, they know the only way they can hold power is to rig elections and that's way they have been so intent on stacking the courts so their paths to rigging elections is protected

this is why trump has been trashing vote-by-mail. And it's why trump and the R's last line of defense will be letting the postal service go bankrupt and fail

    they are unprincipled scumbags

Essentially, Republicans are using the claim of widespread voter fraud to conduct their own systematic voter fraud.

Yeah, that's about the size of it.

...and I still can't believe how gullible some people are. They evidently either don't have the ability to reaon and be able to question things or they simply are unwilling to do so.

...as for myself, well, I'm from the Woodstock generation, and so I pretty much question everything. :bgrin:

Unfortunately, that's today's GOP's modus operandi - yelling fake news while spreading lies.

I think Lebron brought this up, but this is why just saying "Vote!" isn't a cure all fix

I'll get slammed for this but I think people should be more outraged about the R's rigging elections than police killings because the number of tombstones created in the war to secure the franchise to vote dwarfs the tombstones of those killed by police (but I suppose in some cases they are one in the same). But there are no dramatic videos of R's kneeling on the necks of voters, even though that is exactly what is happening
