    Hello darkness, my old friend
I think institutional racism among the police is THE problem when it comes to police disproportionately brutalizing people of color, which is where these protests began. I don't think the "defund" people have even implied that police reform fixes everything about racism or conflict in communities, minority or otherwise. Police brutality sparked the protests and the first point of anger was police brutality aimed disproportionately at black people, and other people of color. The second impulse was "how do we ratchet down the violence in general" and that's what led to the defund movement. And the defund movement doesn't put all the blame on police--the idea behind defund is exactly what you're saying: the problems of violence in communities are greater than just systemic racism and corruption within the police departments. We put too much on police, requiring them to address issues they're not trained for and we use police as a solution after the fact, rather than addressing underlying problems.

what nationalistic bubble are you looking at racial profiling through anyway? what you and maris use to justify racism is actually classism and yes...minorities live in ghettos...all over the world...not just here...nationalistic sabre rattling has nothing to do with racism and addressing the disenfranchised among us....Would you have this conversation with a black person? Yeah...didn't think so..

No, I'm not. Nonetheless, his messages/movements stemmed from those of peace. I'm all about giving peace a chance. Not destruction and the like.

He couldn't "mandate" stuff--he wasn't in charge. Was he demanding government action? Yes. He was a huge proponent of the Civil Rights Act and it would never have happened without his constant pushing for it and driving up support for it. Martin Luther King Jr. was a tireless advocate of government's role in protecting vulnerable minorities and a great example of how to use advocacy to push for top-down change.

Can't tell if you honestly don't know who enacted the civil rights act, or if you're trying to make some grand point that failed to land.

I think that easy changes are seldom right changes. The devil is going to be in the details with respect to "defunding" proposals.

I have a pretty good idea you don't breach this subject with them.....would you tell Damian Lillard what you feel about racial profiling? I know Maris wouldn't

I hope if you do, you don't talk to them about how there's no systemic racism, or some of the other sillier race related topics you espouse.

As stated elsewhere, I'm all about the peace aspect. Even George Floyd's brother pleaded for that.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I loved that man.

Great, then you lemme know who's in charge of the system, and I'll let them know my thoughts. I guess we start with the last handful of Presidents. They've all had their stabs at this.

If there is no law saying oppressing people is bad or illegal, those who oppress have no reason to change. Just because a portion of your society/city opposes it and is trying to do things "grassroots" style, doesn't give them enough incentive to change their ways.

I.e., it wasn't until the government said "you have to allow those black children into your schools" that the schools all the sudden were like "oh, hey, that sounds like a good idea".

I don't disagree, however defunding is still vague. It differs from state to state as to the meaning and implementation of what they want.

Its very fuzzy right now. So i'm not sure with that fuzziness, we can properly judge defunding as being good or bad.

It all depends on what will happen in the defunding process. Where is the money going?

I do think that it is a great start, but if not fully followed through with, the devils will indeed pop up.

you really need to learn about logical fallacies, or at least learn to stop using them.

This is the most epic post of my 5 years at SC2! Bingo, bango, bongo. 100% pure truth. Sorry @ABM but you just got completely owned (no parallel to slavery intended). An absolutely beautiful response, @SportsAndWhine!
