What exactly did the senator say that was wrong?

If the league is allowing statements on jerseys, then they should be open to opposing statements. Woj appears to think he's speaking for the NBA...

The troops are puppets of BIG OIL and CORPORATE ASSHOLES for illegal wars around the world. Don't deserve recognition.

The Police are systematically eliminating minorities on the orders of the GOP. Don't deserve recognition.

China is a benevolent country who is merely trying to reclaim their natural state of Hong Kong, which has been unjustly been corrupted by the evil, capitalists of the West. The poor citizens of mainland China should share in their wealth.

    Viva China!!!!

And the NBA can't lose money by saying anything bad about China.

They have to kiss the ring.

Were there players who wanted those messages and were denied? Honestly asking, because I may have missed it if there were.

If not, then it's silly for Hawley to suggest them just because those are the messages he supports. These are messages that the players will be wearing...they shouldn't be wearing messages they don't support just to make Hawley feel better.

Hawley is obviously speaking for the silent majority of NBA players who want to wear "back the blue" shirts, but are being shouted down by the America hating minority!! and the group that hates American, they're minorities too! double political correctiness whammy!

Like so many politicians on both sides of the aisle these days, Hawley seems to be mentally enslaved by the party’s dogma. As Minstrel noted, if there were players who wanted to make the points he espoused and were denied the opportunity by the league, he might have a point. But there weren’t, so the only point he has is the one his MAGA hat fails to cover.

Well, duh. I said in the original thread on the topic, the jersey statement policy is a slippery slope, because freedom of speech goes both ways. Guess what, here we are! I know nothing about the senator in question, but asking the obvious question is more akin to playing devil's advocate than it is to trolling. If Woj didn't see that coming, as evidenced by how easily offended he was, then he's a lot less intelligent than I've given him credit for.

Doubtful, but I don't think that matters. The players were given an approved list of messages, which means the dialogue was intentionally limited from the get go. (I much prefer "break the cycle," as suggested by several players.) Whether or not the players would choose anything on Hawley's list, it's a bogus platform if the narrative is fixed. That deserves to be questioned.

I assume the NBA rolled out this policy to entice the players to not opt out of resumed play, so it's probably the player's union that should be on the defensive.

The players themselves agreed to the statements that they wanted to wear. The players and the NBA are making a collective statement about Black Lives Matter and not an open forum to just share ideas. There is nothing wrong with that. I don't know of any NBA player who would want to say, wear "All Lives Matter" on their jersey. And I don't think anyone would want a swastika on the jersey either. So there are parameters. This isn't about what the Senator wants though. He is not in the league. He does not get to put a phrase on his jersey. So yes, Fuck You was the appropriate response.

If you want to get after fascist go hang around a statue or where a civil citizen's business is being destroyed or broken into, then do your thing.

From what I understand, the list was created in consultation with the players. I don't think that counts as a "fixed narrative"--this isn't something the NBA imposed upon the players, and an unpopular slate of messages (to players) wouldn't be an inducement to keep players willing to play.

I am glad the Senator is so concerned about our troops. I hope he will demand Trump carry out strong action against Russia for taking out bounties on American soldiers. So far he has not said a word.

Exactly. This is what the players want to say. This is not advertising for everyone outside the bubble's beliefs.

The players weren't GIVEN an approved list. They MADE the approved list. The players. and the league came up with what they wanted to say and that's what the list. This is a statement by the players and the league.
