it's really remarkable....in a very stupid way...that trump has decided he wants to go to war over re-opening schools. It makes no political sense. The only people on his side will be the kool aid slurpers

    new polling from Axios-Ipsos:

    upload_2020-7-15_9-32-4.png

"Most U.S. parents say it would be risky to send their children back to school in the fall — including a slim majority of Republicans and a staggering nine in 10 Black Americans — in this week's installment of the Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index.

Why it matters: President Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos have threatened to withhold federal funds from schools that don't reopen. The new findings suggest that this pressure campaign could backfire with many of the voters to whom Trump is trying to appeal ahead of the election.

The big picture: Week 16 of our national poll finds that only one in three Americans trust the federal government to look out for their family's interests — a new low — with people's confidence also sliding (but still higher) in their state and local governments and the Federal Reserve.

    • 62% of Americans — a record high — now say they're wearing a face mask whenever they leave the house. That's up nine percentage points from late June, with the biggest driver being the rising share of Republicans now wearing masks at all times.
What they're saying: "Americans at this point, and parents more specifically, can't be force-fed policies that go against what they think," says Cliff Young, president of Ipsos U.S. Public Affairs.

    • "You can't wish away or scare away a virus," Young says. "And right now, they're not feeling safe in putting their children back in school."
    • "There's political risks as well — serious political risks for Trump and Republicans. Because even the Republican base sees a risk in putting kids back into the school in the fall." "

what kind of worked for trump in 2016 was finding divisive issues and staking out a hard-line position. But Biden ain't Clinton, and the country is a hell of a lot different now. And of course, we now have nearly 4 years of a trump white house to gauge what that means

Why he has chosen to die on the hill of re-opening schools is a crazy-town question. But, why he has chosen to stack his credibility against Fauci in a smear campaign may have the same answer: he has nothing else in his playbook other than attack, dodge accountability, and spewing racist dog-whistles. Those appear to be the only arrows in his quiver......

......other than starting another war of course....news at 11:00

While San Diego county has increasing cases - it is not a crazy hotspot like LA - yet, the SDUSD (Unified School District) will not open - I was told that the reason is that to do it safely will be stupid expensive - and they just do not have the funds.

Our local School District just sent their current plans - and they will vote on it soon - but given what it means to open the schools - I suspect they, too, will consider remote learning - or at least only partial on-campus learning (like staggered 2 days a week or so for additional space).

On the other hand - my oldest will be going to Minnesota to College in the upcoming year, so far, they are planning on having on-campus learning and from what we have heard, they have rented a lot of hotel rooms to expand their dorm capabilities - to have single student per room. My kid as a 1st year student will live on campus in the dorms, but I understand that 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students that live in the dorms are likely to be in the hotel rooms.

Not sure that's necessary. Studies have shown that most children under the age of 12 spend less than 15 hours per week watching porn.

I think that they should reopen all public schools for classes...just as soon as Trump and Betsy Devos sign up to be substitute teachers for when the full-time teachers inevitably come down with the Covid.

Israelis Fear Schools Reopened Too Soon as Covid-19 Cases Climb
Outbreaks in schools had infected at least 1,335 students and 691 staff by Monday since the reopening in early May

Israeli Data Show School Openings Were a Disaster That Wiped Out Lockdown Gains

    https://www.thedailybeast.com/israe...were-a-disaster-that-wiped-out-lockdown-gains

Of 1,400 Israelis diagnosed with COVID-19 last month, 657 (47 percent) were infected in schools. Now 2,026 students, teachers, and staff have it, and 28,147 are quarantined

Nearly one-third of Florida children tested for COVID-19 are positive

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crim...-tested-for-covid-19-are-positive/ar-BB16MKQP
The latest numbers show 54,022 children under the age of 18 have been tested, and of those tested, 16,767 have tested positive.

“They are seeing there is damage to the lungs in these asymptomatic children. ... We don’t know how that is going to manifest a year from now or two years from now,” Alonso told reporters. “Is that child going to have chronic pulmonary problems or not?”

This is an ongoing situation that we've never dealt with before. Caution is key. Especially when it comes to the chillin's.

hospitalizations remain very low at about 1.2% of all cases. the age group that wouldn't be attending school (<5 years) is nearly twice that at 2.2%. younger siblings would appear to be more at risk to severe developments.

White House vows not to 'let the science stand in the way' of reopening schools as poll shows three-fourths of parents DON'T back Donald Trump's reopening demands
    • White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Thursday afternoon that 'science should not stand in the way of' schools reopening in the fall
    • 'The science is on our side here,' McEnany said. 'We encourage... states to just simply follow the science, open our schools – it's very damaging to our children'
    • The comments come as Donald Trump continues to pressure schools to resume in-person classes as coronavirus cases continue to surge
    • A new survey released Thursday shows that 72 per cent of parents of students K-12 say they don't want schools to reopen
    • The same poll shows only 25 per cent of American adults are for the president pressuring teachers and school administrators to return to the classroom
