Outside of a franchise player (Dame, Luka, Giannas, LeBron, etc), two-way wings are the most coveted asset in today's NBA. If GTJ continues to play at this level on both ends of the court, he's definitely getting paid in full and Portland would be smart to keep him in the Rose City.

When you guys say we'll pay Trent a lot in his next contract, remember that Olshey always gives away his former 2nd-round picks. Layman looked stupendous, too.

You should speculate on what Olshey will pay a team to take Trent.

Stinks that he hits free agency next season when a ton of teams are gearing for cap space. Could be looking at matching a big deal for him, ala Allen Crabbe.

Layman looked stupendous in about three games as a Blazer. He’s pretty much done jack as a T-Wolve.

His super-long curls to the hoop thrilled everyone here for more than a season.

Stotts crafted the play for him. Predictably without customized plays, he now looks like an ordinary mid-2nd round pick with his mediocre defense. But that's irrelevant to my point that Olshey's history contradicts this thread's expectation that he will value his 2nd-rounder Trent for a big contract.

Layman never looked as good as Trent, IMO.

Layman and Crabbe didn't have the prowess on the defensive end like Trent does either. This is our Wesley Matthews 2.0.

Keeping Trent and trading CJ reminds me a lot of when the 1983 Lakers got rid of Norm Nixon for Byron Scott. Nixon was great, even helped win a championship, but was older and made a lot more money. GM Jerry West was bold enough to take a chance on a young buck. It sure did work out, and kept the Laker dynasty going longer too.

    Hmmm.

Dude this organization ain’t shit without CJ. We need all the talent we can get. CJ saves us A LOT when it comes to crucial games. So again, we need all the talent we can accumulate

Let's be a LITTLE cautious about the "GARY TRENT IS A BASKETBALL GOD!!!!" talk. This is the kind of thing that gets you thinking that Terry Rozier is a star and Bismack Biyombo deserves a massive contract. Plus, teams may SOMEDAY play in front of fans again, and some of the players who are going crazy in the bubble (TJ Warren) may fall back to Earth.

Yeah, kind of helped that they had MAGIC JOHNSON AND KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR.

Trent and CJ's games aren't really that similar. Trent has a fairly rudimentary handle whereas CJ has one of the best in the league. You only talk about trading CJ if you're getting a star in return, otherwise only Lillard can really create his own shot.

Some of the people going batshit over Trent are the same ones who thought Anfernee was a star when he went ham on the Kings last year. Let's enjoy the Trent ride while we're on it, but not necessarily think it's the new normal. It's Trentsanity.

well the nice thing is we have another season to see if he is "for real" and if he keeps this up his trade value could be very high, so it puts us in a good position with "options". I prefer to keep him but its always nice to have options

Trent has done something that Layman couldn't. Create for himself and keep improving as he went along. Jake is a solid role player, Gary is a solid 6th man type player, potential starter.

Jake never played like a a 6th man or starter on the Blazers.

Anfernee really should have stayed in college (or better yet, gone to college). He would have benefited a lot from college, at least 2 years in it, if not 3. But it's foolish to give up on him, considering he *just* turned 21 2 months ago.

Trent also would have benefited from staying another year but he knew that his minutes at Duke would have been cut due to Zion going there, so he gambled at going into the NBA. Had there been no Zion, chances are Gary would've had a much more impressive sophomore year than he did and been a higher draft pick than he was in 18. He was also physically more ready for the NBA than Simons was, but he also looked completely lost out there during stretches of his rookie year and even this year.

How Trent is playing, and how fans reacted to his play at the start of his career (myself included) is a cautionary tale about how many fans are fucking idiots and tend to not always know what they're talking about.

I will say this, though: the current Gary Trent is the best Gary Trent the Blazers have ever had. Petition to refer to the other one as Gary Trent Sr.

(This is what you get for naming your kid after you. Now anyone wanting to Google Sr.'s highlights will get Jr.'s)

I always like Trent over Simons but there know reason to give up on Simons even I really don't care for him not playing in flow of the offense like Trent does. Defense I Simons will be alright when he gets stronger. Now Trent he just have so much confidence out there on both side of the ball and I think he just stretching the service on both side ball too.

Big difference. lakers were already a dynasty and likely would have been similar in success to what they did with Scott if they kept Nixon. Blazers aren't a dynasty.
